I was really excited to try this place out as it's right down the street from work. I have only been there once, so I'll review based on that single visit.
To start, this is a walk-up window only. The service was truly very friendly, but pretty slow for a walk-up fast food situation. The gentleman who served us was helpful and accommodating, but it was 15+ minutes from time of order until we had our food. And we were the only ones in line at the time unless there was a bunch of door dashers submitting orders. Luckily it was a nice day so we hung around on the sidewalk out front (no seating inside or outside).
I ordered the Culture meal, which is a sandwich, bag of chips, and a drink. With the square-type point of sale system, I had to choose whether to tip prior to getting the food, so with an 18% gratuity, my lunch was $22 and change. One of my buddies got the cookie monster brownie which looked amazing, but it was $7 for a 3" square dessert bar.
The friendly guy brought the food out to us, which I thought was a nice touch. My sandwich and my friend's sandwich were both swimming in oil when we opened the to-go boxes. I don't know if that was the intent, but it's like they took the chicken patties straight out of the frier and put them on the bun, so top to bottom the brioche style bun was slick and hard to hold and was basically an oily mess by the time I finished it. Good thing they gave me 5 or 6 napkins b/c I used them all.
Flavor-wise, I actually really liked what they put together. The slaw, sauce, and onions were a really good balance of fat and acidity. If you like something similar to a Carolina-style bbq sandwich, you'd like this.
I hope Chixen can dial it in because it's a great concept and a great spot for a quality quick lunch option. My suggestion would be for them to lower their prices by about 30%, dial back the oil, and figure out quicker prep/production to get the food out in under 10 minutes. If this was a food truck, people wouldn't wait. Best...
Read moreCool concept in Chixen! To-go food, only. All chicken patties, different kinds of buns depending on the sandwich. Incredibly kind staff, with a genuine interest to do well with this new business. I have a lot of hope for this place, I think they need to opt for different buns. It was so dry that it made it hard to enjoy the sandwich. But I like the ingredients that make up each burger. If you get a quarter pound, it is one patty, if you get a half pound it is two patties, and so on The idea of beef bacon is different, but I think it's unnecessary. It doesn't add much flavor and it doesn't have the crisp that bacon tends to lend to a standard burger. I'm not a fan of velvet cake in general so the sweets didn't really grab on to me; but I think the chocolate flavor could be amped up a bit. Staff all wore masks, respecting the pandemic guidelines. There's street parking. It may be hard to order from the window if you're in a wheelchair, but the staff is very accommodating so I think a work-around would be...
Read moreDONT MISS THIS PLACE!! Uniquely delicious and creative chicken burgers! Had The Culture burger which was AMAZING!! Nicely seasoned juicy chicken patties, fresh pretzel bun, crispy citrus red cabbage slaw. How could something so delicious be so healthy as well?? I mean I’m practically the world’s biggest fan of the Popeyes spicy chicken sandwich, but move over Popeye got to make some room for healthy CHIXENKC. Being hungry on arrival decided to try to out some chili on the order. Wow was that a great decision….the jerk chicken chili just REVERBS with deep SAVORY spice levels! ! Honestly, one of the top five chilis I’ve ever had, and I’m 57 years old and lived in Texas so have had more than a few chili bowls. Thoroughly Enjoyed it even though it was a hot KC August day, their jerk chicken chili would completely hit the spot as things cool down in the fall. It’s a small takeout window so be careful and don’t you miss it-just opposite a small playground park, look for the flashing light in the window. So...
