EDIT: So I ran into a slight issue. Not reducing my star count because everything was still amazing but it is still an issue people and the restaurant should be aware of. As stated below, the first time my wife and I went here we ordered the Meet Tray and it was amazing. My favorite on that tray was the Gaslight Lamb. It was great and tasty! We went back last night and rather than order the sampler tray again, we each ordered our own plate. Wanting more of that delicious gaslight lamb I ordered the Lamb Special, which claims to have the gaslight lamb. What I received however looked and tasted nothing like what was on the Meet Tray. Not like any of it. This is not to say it wasn't good, it was amazing and I joyfully ate it which is why I'm not removing any stars. But something is amuck here. I didn't complain either because it was so good. Looking at other reviews it seems I got the same dish as every other reviewer that's ordered the Lamb Special, but it looks nothing like any of the items on the Meet Tray. So what is that mystery meat in the center of the tray there? Is that the Gaslight? Or is the Lamb Special the Gaslight? One way or another it seems there's a flaw on their menu or some confusion as to what is what.
Let me start this review with this: this is, hands down, THE BEST ETHIOPIAN RESTAURANT IN ALL OF KANSAS CITY! I don't say this lightly or without experience in Ethiopian foods. I've eaten at many different Ethiopian restaurants in the area, some amazing, some lackluster, but after eating at J&K I have no hesitations of naming it best in the land. Seriously, you need to come here and try this.
Your experience starts as soon as you open the door to the dining room. Such an amazing smell of great foods to come hits you and instantly makes you want food from this place. As far as service, it too was just as friendly and superb as the smells and food. There are loads of things on the menu that sound super tasty. If you've never experienced Ethiopian food before just pick a meat or veggie that you'd generally like and order something in that area and I'm sure you're gonna love it. We picked the Meet Tray, that's the way they spelled it in the menu and I like it that way, because we wanted to get a wide selection of what they have. There were two types of lamb, one type of beef, and one type of chicken. There was nothing on that tray I didn't want to keep shoving into my mouth just to taste it. Sure I had my favorite one, and my wife had a different favorite, but everything was an incredible tasty treat. And then there's that Injera, the bread, what you use to pick up those tasty morsels of food, also just as incredible and tasty.
I seriously cannot implore you more to eat here. You will not be disappointed and your tastebuds will sing the praises of the tasty dishes...
Read moreI was blown away. I praised this place’s food to so many people until their ear bleeds. I am so excited to go back soon with my husband. It was my second time trying Ethiopian food. The first was at Mesob on Broadway about 7-8 years ago. It wasn’t much impactful. Never tried Ethiopian afterwards for a long time. I had a chance to hang out with several girl friends last night and wanted to be adventurous in terms of food selection. We all agreed to meet here but I was half excited to try something new in a long time and half doubtful/worried. And though I still give 5 stars, we waited about 70-75 min for food to be served. The server was absolutely nice and sweet though. The lamb special I tried was MAGNIFICENT! A few of my friends who were Ethiopian food virgins didn’t like the taste of injera but I thought it was so unique and super tasty! And all my 6 friends ordered different dishes and I tried a bite of every dish. I was so curious about every dish so I had to try. Man every single dish (lamb, beef, chicken and vegetarian) was so good!!!!! I hardly ever spend time on reviewing anywhere or any product but I thought this place needs some big compliments so here it goes, my 5...
Read moreMy wife and I just ate at J&K Ethiopian Restaurant. We love Ethiopian food and have been to several in KC and other cities.
This was the best Ethiopian food we’ve ever had!
Everything tasted so fresh. Each dish had distinct flavors.
We got the vegetarian platter and lentil sambusas…and we just added Baklava. Huge serving. All delicious.
The meal came with a soup. It tasted like a combination of vegetable soup and lentil soup with rigatoni. Great start to the meal.
Then we had the sambusas. They come out really hot so wait a few minutes. They were fresh and so good. I eat meat so I also got the beef sambusa. It was like an empanada but better.
The vegetarian platter had red lentils (our fav), a chic pea/split pea type dish, collard greens, and cabbage and carrot dish. All were better than we’ve had at any other Ethiopian restaurant.
The baklava was very good and a perfect way to finish the meal.
The prices are very reasonable…probably should be higher.
Come support this fantastic local restaurant. It’s located off the frontage road of I29 on 72nd (by...
