I have reviewed this place before. I was just responding to a question and mentioned that I wish I could update my previous positive review and then after I posted, it gave me the opportunity.
I moved to this area in 2005, after Katrina, and I used to frequent Mr. Poor Boy's several times a month. I loved the food, the staff knew me and most of the time knew what I liked. But the previous owner, Don, left and new owners came. The very first dish I ordered was my usual Friday fish plate. ( This was something I ordered frequently and it came with a choice of a potato - garlic, mashed or potato salad, and either corn, peas, carrots and sometimes Mac and cheese. ) It was usually pretty good.
But the first Friday I ordered the fish plate under the new ownership the food was different. The catfish was tolerable, but the garlic potatoes and the macaroni and cheese we're the most disgusting sides I have EVER seen in my entire life. The potatoes were small, very undercooked chunks covered in this slimy gross mess - it looked and tasted like it was regurgitated or barf. It was that disgusting.
The Mac and cheese had molded into the little side divider of the plate, so when I tried to get a forkful, the entire thing lifted out of the plate like macaroni stuck inside cheese covered plastic.
I have no agenda or motivation behind my review other than just leaving an honest review of my last experience after ordering there. I made my last order there within the first week after the new owners began serving food there. That may have been over two years ago, but I'm not sure. I just know that after that particular order, I never went back. I never called them or complained because I honestly just didn't trust the service there anymore. That experience influenced me that much.
As I previously stated, I got food from them frequently, over ate least a 10 year period, so, I'm not confused as to which restaurant I'm reviewing. However, it has been maybe 2 years or longer since this happened, so if there's been a change, I...
Read moreStopped in for a togo plate to avoid cooking dinner. Decided to get the seafood platter for $22 ($24.02 tax). It's definitely ALOT of food. Everything was cooked to order. The fries are crinkle fried and really good. The hushpuppies are amazing. The shrimp is really good. Wish I had just gotten a shrimp po'boy. I asked for the oysters to be fried hard, which they were but the inside was still soft. I did not like the oysters and the fish, mainly because of the batter they used. It has a lemon taste to it but it tastes more like that concentrated lemon juice versus fresh lemon. I tried pulling the batter off but the fish and oysters but there was no hope for the oysters but i was able to eat the fish once i pulled the batter off. Thats just my personal preference. One thing I can say, being a fisher woman myself, THEY DEFINITELY SERVE REAL CATFISH AND NOT THAT SWAI stuff. Won't say I will not go back, I just won't order fish and oysters. The lady behind the counter was very friendly but I can't say the same about the guys behind the counter. They didn't talk to me personally but didn't seem to friendly either. Maybe it's just me. Anyhow, give them a try, maybe you'll like them. Everyone has different tastes but most have the same expectations. I read the reviews AFTER I ate there just make sure it wasn't just me. Some people like the food and others don't, that's with any restaurant or business. What disturbed me however, was the response to the negative comments by ownership. Since they will probably read this, I will just say, you get more bees with honey than with vinegar. The reviews are bringing issues to your attention publicly and that's more reason to fix issues. Word travels fast and small adjustments with a lot of humility and kindness can go a long way! Again, the hushpuppies, fries and shrimp were good but I did not like the fish or the...
Read morePOOR is the best time to describe this place! I have eaten here often on for 15 years and was always satisfied before. Today we picked up sandwiches, three of them being sandwiches with roast beef and ham dressed. The sandwich literally had one piece of ham, one piece of roast beef, barely any dressing. The gravy was everywhere and cold. Every sandwich was cold. The shrimp were dried and over fried. I normally don’t call and report food like this, but being the second time I figured I would let the manager know, when I called he simply said he was sorry I felt that way and gave me the phone to the owner, who was unfriendly and actually acted as if I was making it up. I told her how disappointed I was in the quality of their service and food and she said oh well sorry you feel that way. I will never go back to her establishment and advise people contemplating ordering food there to reconsider. Poor all the way around! Service,...
