I have been visiting Key West for the first time in Australia. This morning I arrived at Key West airport early to check in and I realised the check in counters open 2 hours before the departure.
I wanted to sit down and have breakfast until the counters are open. I walked in to the only restaurant/cafe next to the check in counters which was CONCH FLYER. There was a sign saying to wait to be seated. As no one else was there I walked to the employee who was a lady at the counter and politely asked “good morning madam, are you open for breakfast? Can I please have a table? She was applying lipstick at the time and she looked at my face and in a very arrogant and ignoring way she pointed out to the restaurant tables and said “what do you think”!!!!?? I was confused and I asked what does that mean. She said “if it wasn’t open why are we here! “ I politely said that I am from Australia and I don’t know that time and also we like to talk and talk politely and it’s an insult when people treat in a rude manner like that. I continued to be very polite and took a table and she did not pay attention to me. I went back to her and asked “can I please have a menu” ? She said yes but she went in and I saw she was telling about me pointing out to me to another person in the kitchen and she did not come out to give me the menu or to talk to me. I had to walk and I am sitting outside being hungry before I catch 3 flights back to Australia!
This really made me sad and I don’t know why some people in the hospitality industry are so rude and insulting to people like myself, especially when we come here as we like this place.
This attitude has...
Read moreI had a chance to make a quick stop in Key West and I was starving, so I went to Conch Flyer. I sat down and noticed that there was a cheerful person behind the bar and another not so cheerful person on the floor providing service. I could easily tell from a far that the person on the floor was mad that I was there. The menus were thrown down, and the order was taken with the greatest of haste. Although the western omelet was tasty it did not have the diced tomatoes that I requested and paid for. The person who served my food may have been having a bad day, and this is understandable, but my suggestion would be that she could have left her troubles at the door so as to provide the service with a smile or at least a little cheer. I left a $1+ tip anyway but it could have been five times that much if only I felt welcome in the Conch Flyer. I will certainly be back in Key West and will stop by again, but next time, I will have lower expectations of the service level in order to reduce the chance of being shocked again. My suggestion to the staff: smile, be cheerful and welcome the patrons warmly, because they are the ones keeping the place...

We were ignored for 10 mins when there was a waitress and two other tables. Not realizing her demeanor, my husband just gave a friendly “hello” to the bartender. She looks at us and says “yeah, I’ll be right with you okayyy” in the most condescending way possible. He says “ok, I’m just saying hello, take your time” snd she says “yeah okay…” in her condescending ways. If you’ve met this women, you know the tone I’m talking about.
After she’s done yelling at another patron for ordering something with bitters, she turns to us and says “you ready to order a drink? Dare and order something with bitters”.
We laughed it off nervously. Both ordered waters. Husband asked whether we could change one of the (10) TVs to NBC to cover the Ryder Cup. She goes OFF. “No! NO!! IF I CANT CHNAGE THE TV CHANNEL YOU'RE SURE AS HELL NOT GOING TO.” We got our stuff and left. Psycho treatment and really wasn’t feeling being harassed by someone who prob expected us to lay down...
