Sweet Home Alabama Soul Food is a fantastic restaurant. I will start with the restrooms and service. The restrooms are very clean. This is a must in the restaurant business. The service was also spot on. The staff was friendly and they also knew their product. They were able to make suggestions and provide clear descriptions about the food on the menu. Now, on to the food itself. The food was delicious. It was hot and cooked very well. I had the smothered pork chop & rice with collard greens and candied yams. I added on a side order of three chicken wings. The pork chop & rice was hot, tender, and well seasoned. I was able to cut it with a plastic knife. Unfortunately, this restaurant only provides to-go plates and plastic utensils, but, the food more than makes up for that. The candied yams were great. I was told that they were just as good as my grandma's and I have to admit that they were pretty close. The collard greens were what really surprised me. Most places serve greens that are bitter, under cooked, and just without flavor. Sweet Home Alabama got it right. These greens were delicious. These greens are probably about as close to what my mama and grandmama makes as any I have ever tasted. Sweet Home Alabama definitely knows what they're doing in the kitchen. The only drawback that I could find was the pricing. In my opinion, the pricing is a little steep. But, the quality of the food helps to offset the slightly high prices. I'll be back to try more at this store. As long as they keep doing what they are doing, the quality and taste of the food takes priority over the prices. That would be the one thing that keeps the fifth star from being a reality. Food: Excellent. Service: Excellent. Cleanliness: Excellent. Value for your money: Not quite excellent. But, this is still a great place to eat with delicious food and great people working there. Roll...
Read moreIt's definitely a HARD pass. Why did they disrespect Alabama cooking like this? Hopefully I can upload pictures. We ordered a fish platter and just know, 1 piece of fish is HALF of a filet. It was over fried and rock hard, we ended up throwing away about an inch off of each side of our halved filets! Terrible.
Those aren't candied yams... just NO! Under cooked and the seasoning was off. Tasted like boiled sweet potatoes with lots of honey. We also ordered a chicken and rice. The chicken was tasty but, YOU, Sir/Ma'am reading this review, go to HEB or your local grocery store and buy a roasting chicken. 2. Clean it and put some season all, and put it in a baking pan and cover it with some "Cream of Chicken" and bake it... same thing here, save your money. The greens were acceptable. Macaroni and cheese is very unseasonably bland. Our food looked NOTHING like the photos posted online.
THEN to sum all of this up, the customer service had the nerve to be bad too. My Husband, being from Alabama, found this place and was excited to support the business. I regretted that I was too tired to cook for my family on this day because, the way this woman spoke to my husband over the phone made me want to hop in my car and come up there to find her myself. Save yourself the disappointment, disrespect and your hard...
Read moreSurprised to see a restaurant in TX called Sweet Home Alabama considering I just PCSd from AL. The restaurant was very clean and the workers were extremely nice including the owner. I've been several times. I want to try everything on the menu. First day - Smothered pork chop, rice, & green beans. I normally don't like gravy but I was sucking the gravy off the bones. :-) Everything was delicious. Second day - Smothered Turkey necks, rice, cabbage, mac & cheese. Depending on your taste for Mac & cheese you may or may not like it. The meal was great! Wednesday, Third day - Dressing. I called ahead and they put some aside for me. It wasn't my mom's dressing but it was ok. Going back tomorrow to taste the ribs. I gave it a 4. My only negative about this restaurant is it is a little pricey. $9.99 one meat/one side. $12.99 1 meat/2sides. Sides are about $3.50 each. You get 2 small cups. I haven't had dessert yet but based on the comments I think I'll pass. I will post pics. Excuse some. I started eating before I took some...
