A Taste of the Caribbean in San Diego: Caribe Restaurant and Bar Delivers Dominican Excellence By blending the vibrant flavors of the Dominican Republic with an unmistakable warmth that feels like a homecoming, Caribe Restaurant and Bar in San Diego has mastered the art of transporting diners straight to the heart of the Caribbean. Nestled in the city’s culinary mosaic, this unassuming gem doesn’t merely serve food—it tells a story, plate by plate, of a culture steeped in tradition, passion, and spice. Walking into Caribe is like stepping into a lively Dominican comedor. The rhythmic hum of bachata and merengue fills the air, mingling with the tantalizing aroma of garlic, plantains, and freshly grilled meats. The décor is understated yet vibrant, with splashes of tropical colors and artwork that evoke the beaches of Santo Domingo and the bustling streets of Santiago de los Caballeros. But the real masterpiece lies in the food—a love letter to the Dominican soul. The mofongo, a quintessential Dominican dish of mashed plantains, is nothing short of transcendent. Crisp on the outside, tender and buttery within, it’s smothered in a garlicky sauce that balances richness with an almost electric brightness. Pair it with the ropa vieja, slow-cooked and simmered to perfection, and you have a pairing that feels like a culinary embrace. Then there’s the sancocho, a stew so deeply flavorful it’s practically an elixir. Each spoonful is a revelation—hints of cilantro, bursts of root vegetables, and tender chunks of meat that practically dissolve on the tongue. If there were a dish that encapsulates the essence of the Dominican kitchen, this might just be it. Caribe doesn’t just stop at the classics. Their ceviche de camarones, marinated in citrus with a kiss of heat, offers a fresh and modern twist that honors tradition while feeling uniquely inventive. The tostones, crispy and golden, are an ideal canvas for an array of house-made dipping sauces, from spicy aioli to sweet mango chutney. But what truly elevates the experience is the service—a seamless dance of professionalism and Dominican hospitality.

We went here for the first time. I told my husband this is a night club, and we don't club. He said I'll ck it out, let's get an empenda. He went in and said they close at 8pm. My first introduction to Puerto Rican /Dominican food. We tried different things. The salad, some kind of root, cheese empenada, fried plantain, and my husband got a chicken dinner. The salad had a vinaigrette taste but differently stronger, I enjoyed it. The empenada was the bomb 💣 , perfectly crispy. The root thing we ate tasted like a garlic buttery potato. Very yummy. The fried plantain was a wonderful sweet treat. The Spanish rice had extras in it. It was also yummy. My husband said the chicken was perfect. I tried the chicken skin. And it was so crispy. Enjoy the pics! The night owl event was starting and we were done by 7:45 pm. They were nice, gracious hosts.

This place has changed over the years and it's a good change, although it's known as a nightclub it's also a restaurant / bar, the food is Caribbean so usually you can get Puerto rican, Dominican and sometimes Jamaican food. They have two bars and plenty of drinks and the service is very good. At least a couple of times a week they will have live music and a DJ every weekend. The only negative is that they are only open on certain days typically Friday, Saturday as a club and restaurant but Sunday's usually just the restaurant. But I've been informed that it's also available as a venue so I believe that will make this place even better.

This place has authentic and delicious Caribbean/Latin bites, if you’ve never traveled to the Dominican Republic or gotten the chance to taste the food, then this is the spot. They had other Latin dishes that co-workers ordered that looked great too. I made sure to order several dishes in order to taste the level of authentic flavor, and wound up with lunch leftovers for the week. I’m not a food critic, but I love to eat and this place didn’t disappoint. The only negative from my visit was that I was there for early dinner and didn’t get to stick around for the dance music that started playing. It reminded me of the music they play at the resorts. In punta cana. I don’t remember my waiters name, but she was was awesome, they brought over an after dinner shot for our group and although we were Uber full, it was a nice gesture. For the owner to come over and make sure we were all doing ok felt over the top until we realized it was out of kindness and not concern. Cant wait to start traveling to our offices in SD to go back!! This time we will stay for the dancing and take the owner up on his offer a “ a great night of dancing after dinner”. My first Dominican/Latino , but not my last thanks team LaLuz!!...

I give very seldom bad reviews unless it is very necessary. My friend and I visited this place first time. We have been to many other salsa spots in SD. There was a concert scheduled and therefore the door price was $40 which was ok for us. Unfortunately, we didn't know that there is absolutely no space to put down your purse or jacket because all tables were "reserved". There was not even a space to put a drink down if you wanted to dance. When asked if I can leave my things in the car parked in front of the club, I was told that I can't leave the premises as there is no reentry rule. Therefore I was in a limbo with not being able to put things down to dance but also not being able to put my things into my car??? When asked to speak to the manager, I've been told there can not be an exception "just for me". Honestly, I do not understand the logic behind this rule but on top, the attitude and rudeness of the manager towards the customer was even worse, giving threats to be kicked out because I challenged the rules, was the cherry on the cake. Considering that clients pay for entry and drinks, and being a small business owner myself, I, for sure, will never spend a penny in this...
