Cakes By Karen — Restaurant in Lakewood

I am still apprehensive about ordering another cake for ANY event, however their smaller baked goods (cookies and cupcakes), I have been a repeat customer for 3 years.

Before reading any online reviews and having a few recommendations from friends who have used Cakes by Karen, I ordered my first cake for my daughters 1st birthday (this was back in 2015 - and by most current reviews, it doesn't look like much has changed).

The two major issues I had with them (but said nothing because it was more hassle then what it's worth) were 1 - A price hike of $25 and 2 - their product was DRY! Initially when I placed my order and showed the associate at Cakes by Karen an example (that look exactly like the cake pictured), I was told the cost would be between $60 - $80 (yeah, I know it sounds like a lot for birthday cake for a 1 year old) and after planing and discussing colors was quoted $75. The next day when I went to pay for my order, I spoke to a different associate who pulled up my order and told me it would be $100!!! REALLY? Look at the picture, $100 for that! Long story short, I just paid the $100.

Thinking it would taste as good as the price, it was huge let down. I don't know if the person making the cake got the recipe wrong or if they used pre-made cakes that sat out for entered period of time.

On the flip side of it all, the cupcakes and cookies seemed to be fresh (baked the same day or day before). I usually get a half dozen that I take to my board meetings and everybody seems...

I ordered 2 cakes for Christmas from here. I picked them up and followed all instructions on transportation and refrigeration. Not even within 12 hours of picking them up, they both fell apart at the middle where the filling is - which means it was clearly a problem with how they were baked and put together. There were bubbles in the cake as well. The chocolate cake I ordered was done incorrect as well - the icing was grainy and a bad texture. Since the shop was closed on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, I couldn’t contact them to get an immediate response to correct the situation. So I messaged them on their Facebook page and asked for a response once they were back. They never did call back. I had to message again and then had to call them. They then responded with horrible customer service and told me I should have brought the cakes back to them in order to get a solution - but they were closed for the next two days after I got the cakes and the cakes literally fell apart, so it would be stupid and difficult and impossible to box them back up and take them back to the store. Also, why would I waste all that extra time and gas?? We went out of our way for these cakes. That’s the dumbest policy ever for food and cakes. 2 small cakes and over $86 and we didn’t even get to enjoy them and they have awful customer service in return, over priced and horrible quality. I wanted a custom cake done for my sister's graduation and after all the reviews here and on Yelp, I was kind of hesitant to order a cake. Well after hours of searching for custom cake shops, this place was the only close one near my house, so I decided to go in and order my cake that I design. The workers were nice and since I provided a sketch of what I wanted, they said they could do it. I ordered a two tier cake, that could feed a party of 50. I believe the bottom was 10inch and the top was 6inch. This cake had sugar flowers, the schools logo, a name piped on and a graduation hat sitting on top (this cake looked like a wedding cake style). Well they charged me $195....lets just say that wasn't even the start of it. When I picked it up it looked good for a fast glance, the credit card machine was taking very slow so I got to analyze the cake. The piping on the name was HORRIBLE (shaky person whoever did it), the sugar flowers were not the color I wanted and it was just basic white flowers that did not look spectacular for the price I paid plus they just stabbed it in the cake, the graduation hat was not made from foundant like I like it to be..it was some dollar store plastic hat, and then the cake was like caving in so they tried to cover it with ribbon around it. Overall, the cake tasting itself wasn't great..I swear the Kingsoopers cake is better. I will not come back for another custom cake and refer others...
