La Iguana Sports Bar — Restaurant in Lawrence

Finding authentic Mexican food in Indy can sometimes be tricky. My husband and I were tired of having mediocre “Mexican” from places like La Hacienda. We happened upon La Iguana just searching Google for Mexican food not far from us in Lawrence. It doesn’t look like much from the outside, but when you step inside it’s cozy, welcoming, nicely decorated, and have very friendly staff.

“Mexican” restaurants are often Americanized where the dishes have ingredients not normally found in true Mexican cuisine like flour tortillas, ground beef, and such. But La Iguana truly is authentic. All of the dishes are homemade and have authentic ingredients and recipes you wouldn’t normally find at a typical Mexican restaurant like mojarra a la Diabla and caldo des res. They have a small menu, but don’t let that turn you off. It means they execute their dishes perfectly!

We often get the street tacos (they offer a variety of meet and seafood protein options). And they make all their sauces and salsas fresh every day and they rotate which ones they have. But everything we’ve tried has always been fresh and delicious!

I was looking for a good authentic taco spot in the Lawrence area. Now being of Mexican heritage and growing up eating home made Mexican food I do tend to be picky about Mexican restaurants. The majority are white washed to cater to the clientele of American people. The food here is definitely 100% authentic. The environment and decor can definitely be improved but the food was really good. This place needs to decide what their identity is. When I got here roughly around 8:30-9:00 pm there was not a lot going on. It was pretty chill peaceful. Then at around 10pm they turned this place in to a makeshift want to be nightclub. They are definitely having an identity crisis. I had initially given 5 stars now they deserve a 3. Truly sad to see a waste of his potential. Ownership should look into getting an experienced restaurant/bar manager/coordinator. With a few changes to operations and some advertising this place can blow all the restaurants near them out...

The new server is very polite and patient and presented herself with etiquette. She smiled alot and was very attentive! The food was on point (I'm a certified chicken and steak tacologist). Everything was well seasoned! The chips and salsa aren't the typical chips and salsa style, but better!
