I have always LOVED Grinder's, but for whatever reason, none of the secondary locations (even when the Lawrence, KS location existed) have ever been as great as the OG location in the Crossroads KC.
My husband and I have visited the Stonewall location twice now in 4-6 weeks, and both times were either a disappointment or a meh at best. His pizza was delicious and the cheese was super fresh each time. His chili bombs were much smaller in portion that I've ever seen at the Crossroads.
Both times for me, though, both of my entrees were not great. The first time we went, I had the OG Philly sandwich, Grinder's has always been known for. I found the beef to be not a fresh as usual - like it had been microwaved and tossed on a hoagie. We were there with several friends for Sunday brunch. While the business was steady, they were not overly crowded and still open tables to be had. Yet, our service was pretty terrible. We waited for a long time for our server to come back to the table after the food was delivered and it was only then that I had a chance to tell her I was missing my side of fries. By the time they finally came out, my already renuked sandwich was cold. I tried to get though it but there was just no flavor and was like chewing on shoeleather. I later contacted Stonewall via FB Messenger and explained our experience. About 2-3 weeks later, a gift card equal to the cost of our whole meal arrived in the mail. We would try again. We thought maybe they were just having an off day.
At our second visit within a month or so, I had the BBQ brisket sandwich with a side of fries. The second visit's food was worse than the first. How? The brisket was so dry it was powdery and only sauce available not anywhere near mild. I took maybe three bites of it and just gave up. When the server finally returned to get refills and drop of our check, I let her know what happened with the food. It wasn't her fault at all. The manager removed my whole order from our ticket. Fair enough.
I'm kinda over going back there again just because I don't think a third time will be a charm.
Parking is super tight at Stonewall and seating inside is fairly sparse (the location is just smaller inside). Parking is equally tough at the Crossroads, especially now that the parking lot across the street has been built on, eliminating all that parking.
When I feel like Grinder's, I'll just head to the Crossroads. It was still awesome the last time I was there. Here's to hoping they never lose...
Read moreAlways have a wonderful time here. Foods fantastic. You can't ever go wrong with a south Philly if you don't know what you want. When they ask cheese whiz its not the canned junk it's a melted cheddar cheese that's the bomb. Ironically enough you can bomb anything. Which that's another banger is the tots with cheese and chili. Slightly different than when you bomb a item but its a treat. Pizza is always a top choice. Thin crust and the topping choice is large. Prices are great for it too by the slice. Wanna eat a moderate amount one slice will do well. Big? Hell get two. Wings are also a great choice but you'll have to learn the sauce names. Not a big deal but heads up on the liquid death. You will get checked on your tolerances with that. the two wings I could finish I got a small congratulations for as a chugged beer and wiped my eyes. Near death is great for pepper heads not wanting to go full tilt. Staff here is some of the best I've met but summer time shows for new people. It can get pretty busy, so those days just expect what you can out of a restaurant this size. Also first impressions of the building can be pretty meh but it's a old building with a lot of love. All those nicks and dents in the wood are just that, alot of history. Drinks like beer are on rotation so be aware if a favorite may move. They always have the staples though. Bartenders are skilled too at mixing up all the well known cocktails. Their cocktail menu too is some fun to try! Can't say a exact favorite as my common drink is neat whisky a lot of the time. Bout the only negatives of a fair review I could ever say is some minor mess ups in order like a side sauce, and a pizza topping twice but nothing past that. Just a quick call and that's fixed. ive been eating here for about 4 ish years or so and finally felt the need to submit a review. Hopefully it helps those looking for a new...
Read moreHaving lived out of town for 7 years, I was looking forward to lunch on the patio. The backyard yard is a casual and fun place to visit with friends and drink from a respectable tap list. The service was great, quick, friendly and responsive, they really do a good job. The food unfortunately is where the chop chop falls off the tracks. Had a Large Marge burger and “upgraded” to Half Ass Fries from the chips for $3.00 more. I have to say, if Marge is Large I would truly hate to meet her skinny sister. This was one of the most pathetic burgers I’ve seen, the patties were less than a 1/4” thick and the size of a Silver Dollar Pancake, bland bun, I mean I’ve had sliders more opulent than this thing. I can also see why they call them Half Ass Fries, because they are, the basket came with literally about 12 crinkle cut French fries that obviously came direct from Cisco Foods. This was more of an insult than an upgrade. Whenever I go to a place that I’m unsure about the food I’ll get a burger because how can you screw that up, and if they pass that test I’m happy to come back and try something else, but I won’t be eating here again. Another little hiccup, ordered a Delerium Tremens before we left and when the bill came, they charged $18.00. My friend was buying lunch so I didn’t know until later, I’m not sure why he didn’t question it when he was there because obviously it had to be a mistake. I’ll return for a beer if someone wants to go there, but I won’t be eating and I certainly will examine my bill...
