I used to love this place. But unfortunately, this time was not great. We went to visit the yearly pumpkin patch, and that part was a lovely experience. However, the rest of it not so much. Their bathroom out of order (fine, things happen), so we were allowed to use the employee bathroom instead, and a random door that was leaning on the sink fell on my two year old scratching his face and hand. If you’re going to let people use that bathroom, it needs to be in acceptable shape, not potentially hazardous. Speaking of hazardous, as we were outside around the fire pits with our kiddos, my son walked up to the log pile and started to pick up the RANDOM AXE THAT WAS JUST CHILLING THERE. Luckily I watch my child like a hawk and wasn’t distracted, so I was able to grab him before he actually picked it up. But like… if you’re going to have kid friendly areas, make sure there’s not a potential weapon of mass destruction in the vicinity. There were a few more things that were frustrating about this visit, but those were the main issues I wanted to address. There were also no adults to be found anywhere. Nobody in charge of things we could talk to. I have never left a complaint like this anywhere. I work in the restaurant industry, so I understand how things can get out of hand. But this was unacceptable, and put our children in danger. That’s where I draw the line. We will not be...
Read moreThis place is fantastic, an absolute hidden gem. Lots of outdoor space with tables, fire pits, hammocks, a very tiny stream, a tented area, a quiet book room, internet access, and more. A small food menu consisting of mainly brunch type foods, a large offering for coffee and a select offering of beer(draft and bottled) and wine. It's a very laid back setting and is perfect for an afternoon enjoying nice weather with some friends, food, and a few drinks. The staff was very friendly and even gave us a quick tour of the space. Second Wave is part of the Arc of Midlands a non-profit organization that fights for inclusion and accessibility for those who have intellectual/developmental disabilities so you can feel good knowing your money is helping others while you're catching a buzz (did I mention they also have honey bees that provide them with wild honey?) and enjoying the space provided. The only thing I would say is lacking is their food menu, but honestly it's more of a coffee shop than a bar or restaurant. So if you're looking for entrees, appetizers, and a fully stocked bar maybe skip it for now and come back when you're looking for a personal pizza, a few beers, or a coffee and a nice hammock to...
Read moreIn reviewing the Second Wave it is important to have some background. I gave it my top rating not in competition with other establishments but rather for it's high quality and it's worthwhile mission. First and foremost, it is a function of the ARC which is a nationwide charitable organization directed at helping our disabled whether from birth or accidental issues. Profit is not their major objective but helping the less fortunate citizens of our society in always is. That said, the Second Wave is a very pleasant, quiet, clean, comfortable and simply appointed beverage shop and reading room. They offer drinks, hot and cold, ranging from flavored water to lattes with plenty in between. They offer an array of used books to either purchase, at thrift store prices, or to read in house for free. They welcome folks to simply come in and read or study at no charge. They have both indoor and outdoor seating in a low traffic somewhat off-the-road location. There are restrooms and even a small conference room. There is nothing pretentious about the place. It is just nice. Try it! ...
