5th VISIT UPDATE:
They use the confusing menus to rip people off! Mama Sol Cocina gouged me today, whether business was doing poorly or they simply took me for a stupid American Gringo boy. The menu explicitly says “$.99 cent taco special,” which is what I ordered, yet this time the cashier kept pointing to some $1.75 ones no matter how I tried to reason—a deceptive up-charge and false advertisement. I get the same order every time I come in here and it has always been $5.75, yet this time it was like 8 bucks. You know what else? This is a racist-a restaurant; I’ve watched their own kind be treated like royalty yet a nicely-dressed non-Hispanic can not expect the same. The cashier and her colleagues are now in the kitchen laughing (probably at me) as I write this, but joke’s on them. While they might’ve stolen 2 extra dollars, MSC lost a once-loyal customer who’d have continued visiting almost every other day. I have zero respect for people who screw others, and it trumps my immense love for tacos. I’ll find another place that doesn’t take advantage of me and you should, too.
ORIGINAL REVIEW:
I have two things to say about Mama Sol Cocina’s.
the menu system has GOT to change. For goodness sakes, customers are bombarded with not one, two, but three different forms of menus—the main board, the chalkboard, and these random neon-colored pieces of paper taped up all over everywhere. It’s ridiculous: there should be ONE simple menu which clearly lays out the food options with their prices. (Management, seriously, please hire a graphic designer or even an affordable college student designer to completely revamp how you make your first impression. You could even opt for a digitally-displayed menu if you’ll require changes regularly. Don’t be a cheapskate, as those few hundred dollars will go a long way in ensuring customers aren’t bewildered. I can guarantee some of them straight-up walk out after not understanding what you offer.)
Their food is pure heaven! I find myself craving those tacos regularly, as they taste like authentic...
We recently moved to Denver from Houston and have been looking up and down for an authentic Mexican restaurant in our area. It used to be our ritual to have breakfast/brunch at hole in the wall Mexican restaurants in Houston every Saturday, so we were quite pleased to happen upon this location.
It's a little mom and pop restaurant. From what I can tell the wife does some cooking, but mostly runs the front of the house, and her husband does most of the cooking throughout the day. The space is definitely small, but it feels very homey.
My husband and I both order the chilaquiles with bacon every time we've been for breakfast, and they are fantastic! They have the perfect amount of spice. We came for dinner once on election night and ordered the burrito plate and pollo con mole. I'm a big mole snob, and this dish was particularly enjoyable. I would definitely recommend the food at this place.
As for the management, I've only had an opportunity to speak with the wife, but she is beyond nice. She walks around the restaurant to make sure everything is OK and checks in to see if you need anything else. Today she didn't even charge my husband for his coffee and carried on a conversation with us during our breakfast.
I felt it necessary to comment on the previous review, as my husband and I were sitting in a booth in the back of the restaurant on election night as this mean, entitled woman entered the restaurant and began chewing out the owner without warning. As I mentioned before, the restaurant is small. It didn't take much to hear a conversation occurring at the front of the restaurant, especially one as loud as this one. The owner DID, in fact, apologize. However, I don't believe the woman even bothered to listen to what the owner was saying. We've been about 6 times and have never had any issues.
If you're looking for an authentic Mexican restaurant with good food and good people, I'd highly...
Read moreI used to really like this place.. Breakfast Burritos are cheap. Not great, but good for the price. Unfortunately, after a group of coworkers ordered breakfast burritos as a call in, and picked them up (which we do often) they called us back to tell us that one of the burritos was wrong (which we realized when we opened the bag). This seemed like nice customer service, and I went to pick up my correct burrito. At that time, the owner asked for the incorrect one in exchange. I had not brought it with me, and questioned why they wanted it back anyway. Once it leaves the building, it clearly cannot be sold to another customer. She then told me that if I wanted the correct one I ordered, I would need to go back to work and retrieve the incorrect one to exchange, or purchase the correct one... again. I was dumbfounded by this and pointed out that we are regular customers and I simply wanted what I ordered, and I wasn't going to double pay. This is when the cook came out from the back yelling expletives at me (I had never raised my voice) telling me to get out and they didn't want my business. I stood there for a few moments calmly reminding both of them that they called me to explain their mistake and were now screaming at a regular customer who just asked for a correct order. If I can get by the obviously horrific customer service, I cannot get by the fact that they actually intended to re-sell the incorrect food that they wanted me to return. Buyer beware here... who knows where your...
