On a Sunday, late afternoon, wanting to overdose on uni. Why would Maruhide Uni Club be closed on a Sunday? My friend suggested Sushi Kara since most have talked about this place as the best place for sushi nearby work. Sure, why not, let's try it. I'm always a fan of sitting at the sushi bar just watching a sushi chef at work. Asking him if the uni and oysters were fresh, he was really honest to say because of the storm last week, the uni may be on the bitter side. Just how I like it. The oysters are hama oysters. Hot green tea is brewed because I can see the waitress doing that from my seat.
With the menu you get one of those sheets you mark your order on. What I marked is yellowtail, uni, oysters, salmon roe and the Aloha roll. That roll was a little bit spicy since there is chili oil drizzled all over it. Next is the smelt roe with quail egg on top and the candy roll. It's not named after Candice and there was no sugary candy on top neither. It did have my kind of candy which reminded me of a rainbow roll at other sushi places. I always want to see what kind of Dragon rolls they have but I would order the Aloha roll again.
I thought it was great service, the waitress was very helpful and was able to answer our questions. She also mentioned we can order with the sushi chef directly if it's something we wanted that is not listed on the order sheet. The sushi chef was very happy that orders were placed with him. Green tea was always freshened up and refilled without asking. When asked if I knew of a good sushi restaurant in Long Beach, the...
Read moreAll of their fish is really really good. Probably the best place to get sushi in my opinion. I eat a lot of sushi all the time and always eat sashimi only. I'll eat oysters and uni and salmon eggs and anything else others wont try. If you have a good sushi spot anything on the menu that's in season should be delicious. If you thing uni is gross and you dont like it then how can I believe you when you give a sushi place 5 stars. There are too many 4½ star rated sushi places in Long Beach that are not even close to that many stars with their food. No way. I wont name names but I have seen some reviews by people who have been to some of the same sushi places I've been to and they handed out the 5 star rating like it was nothing. Nope. Those places are terrible. The thing is, if you find a sushi place that only serves fresh, not frozen, seafood then you know they only buy what's in season. Sushi Kara is very good! A+! Take it from a real sushi connoisseur, and go here if you want really good, fresh and delicious sashimi. Baby yellow tail to die for. Salmon that's so fatty the flavor lingers on your tongue for a minute. Black snapper that has a very slight char on the skin and oily with amazing flavor. Great, I made myself wanna go...

I used to eat here all the time, but after what I experienced today I will stop. I ordered food to go, and as I am waiting for the order to be bagged up, I see the employee drop the container of salad on the floor. He then picks it up and puts it in the bag with the other food. When I objected to this, he seemed confused as to why I would find this to be a problem. Finally he offered me a new salad, but still could not see that he had contaminated the entire bag of food. It's like taking every employee's shoes and putting it in my bag of food. What made this worse, is I believe the offending employee is either the owner or the manager.
If this happens in full view of customers, what goes on in the kitchen?
Update: From the now deleted owner response, it is sad that he really missed the point on what he did wrong. Don't pick something up off the ground and place it into someone's bag of food. It's wrong... Don't...
