Hotville chicken? More like HOT MESS CHICKEN...
I'm usually quite skeptical when it comes to pop up shops and my visit here this past weekend proved my theory correct. There's been so much hype about Hotville since featured on Thrillist and LA Eater, that this place has been drawing crowds nonstop. People have reported waiting for upwards of 5 hours just to sample the newest Nashville fried chicken, which is is said to be the newest competitor to Howlin' Rays down the street. Well, save your time and money folks because Hotville is NOT worth the wait for mediocre food. They can't seem to find a functional way to run this restaurant, and I question how they can ever be a fully functional establishment if they can't even handle a day of business (currently they are only open on Saturdays).
My group of friends and I decided to come around 3:30pm since we figured it would be a down time between lunch and dinner and that the lines would have died down by then. The funny thing is that there were no lines and we were seated right away upon entering. Although once we placed an order for our food at the bar, they mentioned that it would take 1-1.5 hours for our food to come out. We thought it was a joke since the place wasn't even packed. Little did we know that they took phone orders and there were about 50 orders before ours. The wait was excruciating and we watched the poor wait staff run back and forth from the kitchen calling out orders every couple minutes. The wait staff apologized several times for the wait and they did their best to provide good service, however whatever they are doing to run the kitchen is definitely not working. It seemed like they only had one flyer in the back for the continuous orders of chicken. What was even more upsetting was that after the 1+ hour wait, I was not satisfied with the food at all. We ordered chicken tenders and wings and both were dry and bland. All the flavor were in the crispy skin but the meat itself was neither tender, juicy, or flavorful like Howlin' Rays. They didn't even have any dipping sauces available to save this disaster of a chicken. I definitely won't be coming back regardless if they somehow figured out how to efficiently run their business, Howlin' Rays is still the place to be for delicious fried...
Read moreCame here a couple times, including today. Last time, I had the half chicken(medium) and the mac n cheese, today I had the Shaw sandwich(mild) and 4 wings(medium), and fries. These were all takeout, with a 30 min drive to home.
The fried chicken is incredibly good for many reasons. The most important one is the crust. This was the most crunchiest chicken I've had in my life. Even in the takeout box while it was steaming for 30 min on my way home, I took a bite and it was a deeply crunchy bite; nothing like it. the spice is what you want. Many people are saying the spice levels are crazy(which they are!), but that's exactly what's expected of Nashville chicken. Medium is very spicy, but the right amount to where I can finish it. I liked the seasoning. There are some other reviews saying its bland, which I agree to an extent it is not as seasoned as other chicken places(I totally agree for the breast meat, but I think that's a given for all places since it's just a hard piece to season). It's light on the salt, but just enough for me to enjoy my food and eat it all without feeling my lips shrivel. it's very juicy, and I'll mainly talk about the breast. IMO, the way you know a place cooks chicken well is how they cook the breast because it's so hard to keep it from drying. Their breast meat is moist and makes it enjoyable as breast meat can be(we all know the dark meat is the best part)
The sides were alright and nothing to particularly write home about, but to me that's completely okay. This place specializes in chicken and as long as they nail that, it's a good chicken spot in my book. And they hit it out of the park. I'm quite surprised the seats aren't filled at this place.
This'll probably be the only Nashville chicken spot I'll be going to now on, other places can't do...
Read moreHow Hot is Too Hot?! After seeing favorable post I decided to treat the extended family to a nice southern meal of chicken & waffles at Hotville Chicken in the Baldwin Hills Plaza. One lost looking couple from Torrance saw the restaurant featured on a morning tv show and asked me what my favorite dish. I told him it was my first time too! Our hopes were high. The décor looked like a lovey southern restaurant complete with a covered porch for outdoor dining. The air was filled with the aroma of sweet fluffy Belgian waffles and fresh-out-of-the-oven peach cobbler (a seasonal special) and because there was a slight mix-up with our online order, they gave us complimentary sweet tea while we waited. Unlike Dave’s this place has a big menu with about nine side dishes including yams, collard greens, and of course mac & cheese. They even have fired fish. I tried to beat the weekend rush for the limited quantity of waffles by ordering online before the place opened. DON’T DO THAT! Since I was a novice and did not talk to the friendly staff about the menu ahead of time, I did not realize the “Cali Mild” was so hot my brother said his tongue was on fire!! The manager explained to us that the “mild” was what we none fire breathers would call medium. We had to take the skin off to eat it. We discovered that the chicken was juicy and succulent under all that tongue-burning heat. So, if you want a regular juicy southern fried chick, just order yours “Plain.” But, if you want something so hot it will singe your eyebrows off, they have two heat levels...
