I got a chocolate waffle cone and it was great but when I was paying for the ice cream the option to give a tip popped up on the little iPad thing and I didn't want to give a tip but I felt pressured to because the people behind me were watching so I did and the experience kinda ruined my mood while eating the ice cream. Don't ask me for a tip. a tip is special, it's for if you go above and beyond. If I want to give a tip I will give it to you in cash after I eat my ice cream. Instead you pressured me to give you extra money for doing the job I was paying you to do anyway. I like the place, but I will not return until you stop socially engineering me into giving your workers extra money so you don't have to pay them as much. Also, the experience wasn't tip worthy, all of the workers looked upset to be doing their jobs (I am cranky rn)
EDIT: I am adding more because I am upset. I paid $5 for my cone with a 15% tip. You could have avoided me being upset my charging an extra dollar. hell, I woulda paid $8 for that ice cream, it was good. I am upset because you peer pressured me into tipping for untipworthy service. The only time somewhere should ASK for tips if in restaurants where the service is an integral part of the experience. I was in and out of vergils in like 2 minutes and only talked to staff for maybe 15 seconds of that, and even for that 15 seconds they did not seem enthusiastic about their jobs. Don't get me wrong, I can't completely blame the place, it was partially my fault for being weak willed enough to be pressured into giving them the tip. BUT, that does not me I should have been put in the situation where I felt pressured to give a tip for untipworthy service.
My final notes because I've been in my car for like 15 mins just being angry over ice cream service and that is very unproductive use of time- just make the ice cream 1-2 dollars more expensive and stop asking for tips. no one likes it
Edit 2, reply to shop: I will change my review to 5 stars if you stop showing the tip prompt. I am a bored college student of summer break so this is a hill I have the time and...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreLet's be honest, folks. I've chased good ice cream across state lines before, but Virgil's Coffee House & Creamery in Louisville, Ohio? That was a two-hour pilgrimage worth every mile. This isn't your average corner shop churning out generic flavors. This is artisanal ice cream heaven, housed in a charming historic home on Main Street.
Walking in, the aroma of freshly brewed coffee mingled with the sweet promise of waffle cones. Exposed brick walls and antique furniture gave the place a lived-in warmth, a world away from sterile strip-mall chains. It felt more like a friend's cozy living room, and the friendly greeting from the owner, Jeff Rich, solidified that feeling.
Now, onto the main event: the ice cream. Made with local ingredients and churned in small batches on-site, the selection offered both classics and unique creations. My internal struggle? Resisting the siren call of homemade cookies in the cookies and cream flavor, or venturing into the unknown with, say, a lavender honey.
In the end, the siren call of "cookie butter" won. And let me tell you, it was a symphony in a scoop. The ice cream itself was smooth as velvet, melting on your tongue like a dream. The cookie butter flavor? Rich, complex, with those little flecks of actual cookie that provided a delightful textural contrast. It wasn't just sweet; it had a depth of flavor I haven't experienced in ice cream before.
Jeff, noticing my pure enjoyment (because let's face it, the happy sighs were probably audible), came over to chat. We talked flavors, the history of the house (turns out it's a local landmark!), and his passion for using top-notch ingredients was truly inspiring. It's clear he pours his heart and soul into every scoop.
Leaving Virgil's, I felt like I'd discovered a hidden treasure. It's more than just ice cream; it's an experience. Sure, the two-hour drive might seem like a stretch, but for ice cream this good, this unique, this crafted with such love? It's absolutely worth it. Trust me, ice cream aficionados, Virgil's is a pilgrimage you...
