I've been coming here for years, but it has been about a year now. Some of the issues have always been but "were" not enough to stop us coming, and others are new and Cooking 101 . First, if you like your breakfast potatoes brown, then you are out of luck. They still will not cook the potatoes any extra than they already are. That has always been an issue with this place. The problem now is that the potatoes are way undercooked. Let's say rare on a scale for reference (not raw but close). They are also seasoned with some paprika it seems, but just enough to make them look a bit red without adding flavor. The taste is pretty much like having cubed potatoes boiled in water until not quite cooked enough and put on the plate with no seasoning at all. Second. Eggs over. Careful when ordering over-easy. Two sets of eggs came out, one was way overcooked (yolks were solid), and the other plate was really undercooked (but I ate them). The overcooked set was sent back and returned even more undercooked than the others. When letting the waitress know, she explained that some runny white is to be expected with over easy. I told her I agreed but that as with meat, there is a difference between raw and rare, and these eggs were raw. (Good analogy is Pittsburgh Rare for a steak. Seared on the outside, blue/raw on the inside). The waitress apologized and asked if my wife wanted something else. By this time, I was finishing my breakfast with the first set of raw eggs, so she said no and just ate the rest of her Flying Crab dish.
We also had a side of zucchini bread. It was bland and lacking any flavor outside of a plain quick bread that was lacking a pinch of salt (this was not the zucchini bread of old that they used to make). We also had a side of bacon and scrapple. The bacon is very good, as well as their scrapple.
With all of this, there is another issue that bothers me. Does the waiit staff have any training on e what food should look like, or are they not even bothering to look at what they are serving.
At the end of the day, the ideas are good on the menu, but the...
Read moreThis is hands down, the best place for breakfast, brunch or lunch in the area! The atmosphere is hip and relaxed. You have a choice of in or outdoor dining depending upon the weather, of course. The interior is magnificently clean and inviting. To be covid safe, have your cell phone ready to scan the barcode at your table, as there are no germy paper menus...Don't fret, the servers will help you!! Many pieces of original artwork for sale, such as beautiful mosaic mirrors and paintings of sunflowers (and even Bill Murray!), grace the walls. There are hip and creative accent decorations all throughout the restaurant. For instance, the lady's and men's rooms are spelled out using measuring cups, with one letter on each cup. The food and service are consistently beyond excellent! The staff is very friendly, efficient and attentive. I've been coming here for many years and have never been let down by the tasty and inventive cuisine. The last time I was here, I ordered a custom Spinach and Cheese Omelette. It was accompanied by superbly seasoned home fries and a choice of breads. The eggs were perfect--fluffy, non greasy and satisfying! I opted for their homemade zucchini bread...a bit of a cornbread taste and absolutely delectable! They have specials that differ each day, depending on the season, as well as the availability of locally grown produce. In addition, The Sunflower is highly environmentally conscious, as you will find no tiny, plastic containers for condiments! I love this!! I most definitely recommend Shorty's Sunflower Cafe to all ages, shapes, colors and sizes! Be it sweet or savory, anything you order is sure to delight both your taste buds and...
Read moreWe've been coming to Shorty's for breakfast from time-to-time for more than five years. They have remained consistent with quality service and food. They recently improved the atmosphere by reconfiguring and expanding the space so that people waiting for tables at breakfast are no longer bunched up near the front doors. They now have places to sit while waiting and it's now usually a relatively short wait. What brings us here after a thirty minute drive from home is the creative, well prepared menu choices and the innovative presentation. You certainly can get your eggs, bacon, toast, and coffee prepared the way you have always ordered them. That's their Basic Breakfast. But, that's not why you're here. You're here for the Flying Dutchman, the Dirty Egg Roll, Texas Eggs in a Hole, or my favorite, Shorty's Omlet that's chock full of good stuff. Dark roast coffee is offered with an upcharge. If you want jelly with your toast you must ask for it and you will receive some home made preserves in a teeny-weeny cup, barely enough for one slice of toast. You can get home made hot sauce in a slightly larger cup, again with an upcharge. The dry, cold in the center, cornbread arrived half way through breafast as if it had been pulled from the refrigerator/freezer and placed briefly on the grill before serving. Team serving works well here, better than other establishments we frequent. All of the servers are friendly, attentive, and accomodating. Prices here are commenserate with the quality of the food. Aside from my above mentioned quibbling, we will surely continue to visit Shorty's for a...
