I just moved from the border, where really REALLY great Mexican food is plentiful. I have been disgusted with most of the Mexican food I have eaten here TBH. Store bought chips, salsa from a jar, nasty beans, tacos, called burritos, made two hours ago.
I have found a number of things to be true about great Mexican food:
They are open for breakfast AND breakfast is made to order. There are some fancy restaurants, on the border, that are not open for breakfast, but these are very $$$$, and this type of restaurant does not exist in Lufkin.
Salsa Salsa Salsa. Red and Green. Hot, and NEVER sour. House made. And, on the border, they also have an orange creamy extremely hot salsa, and a smoky Quemada. Every restaurant has at least 3 of these. Taqueria has a superb red, and a great green salsa. Really really good. The best I have found in Lufkin.
TORTILLAS. Homemade. I have only tried the harina/flour so far. They are a little small, but very hot, and very fresh. They are also more like the flour tortillas in the valley, kind of chewy and tasty.
Last but not least, fillings, and sides. I have had their Ala Mexicana and scrambled eggs, and tacos Ala cart. Their tacos are quite small, so I get the pate and make their own. Their hash browns are perfectly cooked. Likewise their beans. I do ask for extra tortillas because they are smaller than I am used to.
This is my go to spot. It actually was the first restaurant I tried, and then I tried a bunch of others, with good reviews, and...
Read moreThey up-charge for everything. My bill went from $45 to $62 from up-charges. They do not tell you upfront or give you an itemized receipt (you can see it if you ask, but they keep it). The owner and a worker were also in a heated argument in front of customers (me and my family) almost the entire time we were there.
UPDATE Dear owner: if you think you can bully me or treat me the way you were treating your employee in our presence you are mistaken. Also, we ordered 4 dishes 9.99 each (3 dine in & 1 to go) and 1 agua de orchata $4.50 and two cups of tap water, for a total of $44.46, the “extras” was onion on 2 dishes. I did not expect that to go up to $61.41. You tried to explain to me all the up-charges and the credit card fee (almost $5) and showed me the menu and receipt but it still...
Read moreOk folks....get in you car and go eat at this place. My kinda joint. Very small and not much seating but the food was amazing. I would like to think I know good mexican food and this place has it. Great chips and salsa. We have eaten there for breakfast and lunch. The ranchero sauce is great too. I recommend trying both the red and green sauce that they bring to the table with your food too. Everything was on point. 10 out of 10 and we will...
