I don't know how this place got supposedly rave reviews for their food. Maybe the reviewers never had good food. This food was bad. Really bad. Not-even-edible bad. First of all, the place is filthy and it smells dirty. That should have been a tip-off; that and all of the flies. Secondly, we ordered the almond boneless chicken and it was terrible. Not only did it look burned, but it looked, smelled, and tasted like fish. Two oval-shaped, sliced pieces with a dark brown coating. Maybe they need to clean the grease or store the chicken in air-tight containers away from other food smells. It tasted and smelled so bad we couldn't eat it. Had to put the lid back on the container because of the smell. Golden Bowl on 21 and Garfield has much better ABC, and you get twice as much, even in the combo platter. The egg rolls at New China are better than Golden Bowl, but the sauce New China uses is terrible; it actually smells vinegar-y. Tastes cheap. They need to use another supplier. The egg rolls are not that much better that it would make us order from here again. We ordered fried rice and even though it is much more moist than Golden Bowl, it tasted burned. But to be fair, Golden Bowl's tastes burned every time, too, so we no longer order it. Golden Bowl's sauce for the ABC is better; New China gave a beige lumpy gravy that smelled and tasted like it was rancid. The almond cookies also tasted like fish, like they had been stored in a refrigerator that had old food smell or had fish in it. Their fortune cookies are even bad. There is a chemical taste to them. I am puzzled as to how their website says the ABC is one of the highest rated dishes for taste and presentation. Don't believe it. I have lived in the area for several years and this was my first time ordering from here, as I heard good things from several people. I don't know how they could recommend this food, and I let them know about it. I won't be ordering again. The portion was small for the price, and was not at all good. I don't mind paying more for good food. This wasn't good food. And they have the nerve to charge 4.25 for a quart of rice, which is one of the cheapest things in the world, along with pasta and potatoes. The best thing was the reusable plastic container that had the chicken in it. At least I got something for my money besides being nauseated. Could it have been a one-time lapse in quality? Maybe, but not likely. It was so bad that I don't have the courage to order anything else from there to give them a second chance. That's the thing with a restaurant; everything has to be the same all of the time and it has to be good. This food was not at all good and not worth a...
Read moreHere’s the thing, normally this place gets a 5 star review from our family. Mostly ordering soup and egg rolls plus additional entrees. Shrimp entrees are always adorned with massive shrimp, they’re one of the few places that offer Mushu, and you can’t go wrong with their egg rolls. Reminds me somewhat of the Chinese food I’m used to in New York. We used to go to Leongs all the time before they sold years ago, but it’s been worth the drive to go to New China Gourmet. The last visit we made we were surprised to see the egg rolls shrunk in size and filling was half missing out of each. I understand costs are high for everyone everywhere but I’d be open to paying more for a larger (what was normal...
Read moreThis is not a complaint about the taste of food, we have ordered many times from this restaurant and the food has been good. The low star rating is because of the service. Bought almost $90 in food, one of the dishes was wrong should have been lemon chicken & we received lo mein, not the end of the world but when we called to tell them they informed us to bring the wrong dish back and they would give us the lemon chicken for an extra 1.06! So we took the wrong dish back, they took it and we gave then the 1.06 and we will NEVER order from them again! Hope the $1.06 was worth it! Oh and the manager refused to come out from the back to...
