Jade Monkey Cocktail Lounge — Restaurant in Madison

First time trying out Jade Monkey as it’s in our neighborhood and we left feeling iffy on the place. The night started out great. Service was a little slow but they were busy and the drinks aren’t exactly the simplest drinks so a little bit of wait isn’t unexpected. No big deal. We had a couple rounds of drinks which were all delicious. Our group enjoyed playing darts and shuffleboard and thought the overall vibes were fantastic. Loved the feel of the bar and decor. However, the issue we had was when they called out last call. Posted hours say they are open until 1 AM but last call was called at 11:00 PM. We felt that was a little early but fine, we’ll grab one more round. By 11:30 PM everyone in the bar was told to finish our drinks and pay our tabs. It just felt a little rude and rushed. I went there for a family event (graduation celebration) at 3:30 pm. I asked the organizer (a family friend) if it was ok to bring the kids. She said she talked to the bar and they said it was early enough that it would be ok. So went with our 4 and 6 year old. Their cousin (6 year old) was there too and they were playing together and just being kids. They were in the arcade room, they ran around, and they engaged with the family and friends. Around 5 pm the party organizer comes to me asking if we could keep the kids under wraps because the bartender said something about it being a bar and the kids were being “crazy”. Not sure that was the term used. About 95% of the people at the bar were with our group, so I doubt we were “bothering” anyone. Jade Monkey is a neighborhood bar with a friendly and fun atmosphere, including a sizable outdoor patio space, arcade games, shuffleboard, and darts, that recently relocated just down the road from the old location.

Drinks here are modestly priced and generally mixed strong. $$$

The new location is much more spacious but I liked the old location much better.

The old location captured the essence of this sorta 'quarky local dive bar' aesthetic that would have been difficult to replicate anywhere else, so I try not to let that factor into my review yet I do think it's worth noting that this presence of for lack of a better descriptor: "uniqueness" is very noticeably absent.

What really made the old location special though was that the patio at the old location was small enough that with weather proofing around the exterior and a small space heater it was feasible to have a very comfortable outdoor patio space...
