Marengo Cafe — Restaurant in Marengo

WARNING! DO NOT EAT AT THE MARENGO CAFE!! I can't be much clearer than that. I would give it zero stars if I could. First they would not allow a pancake for toast substitution. Whatever. To each their own. I was informed the substitution was possible for a $3 upcharge. For one pancake. My husband instead ordered Texas toast and they brought him one slice only and said that's what the policy is. Really!? One slice of toast for an omelette breakfast!?! The waitress' explanation to my husband's question in regards to this policy was,"well, now you know." She was incredibly rude. Then the bill came. And the fun continued. I reviewed it because something didn't seem right and we were over charged by $3.48. Fine. Everyone makes mistakes. Even incredibly rude waitresses. It was lowered back to the correct amount and I went to the register to pay. You guessed it! More shenanigans. Because I used my credit card to pay for a $37 meal including tip, they charged me an extra $1.25 !! When I asked the owner about this she said it was the credit card company(Visa) that forced them to charge this and she didn't like it. I found this very odd because I have used my card all over the world and only the marengo cafe has ever tried such a lame maneuver. I won't be returning and this is going to sound petty, but $1.22 surcharge for using a credit card? If you don't like credit as a means of payment then make a billboard on the door stating as such or bring it up at payment. Our party of 3 had cash to pay this bill if it was stated at any time prior to you just adding the surcharge to the card upon checkout. Food is great. Staff friendly. Called to talk to the owner about the surcharge and he claimed the company adds it... which clearly, he refuses to accept the fee for accepting credit as payment and has instructed his processor to charge the patron. If you want to avoid the 3%it costs to accept credit cards as payment for additional business, then don't accept them as payment and go cash only. I'm done here... over $1.22...Clearly written on the register he claims...Some tiny note in the cafe...Why don't you explain to your customers when they hand you the card there will be an additional fee instead of expecting them to read every note in the cafe that may or may not be directed towards them? Do not order biscuits and gravy!!!!! I have scrolled the reviews and David from two years ago agrees it is bland. There is no meat and seems very much like flour for the flavor. I know this isn’t five stars, but you have to have a little bit of grease or cream in the recipe or it will be nothing but paste. When my family and I were talking (amongst ourselves) about this one of the staff members came over and made a big deal about it like we were in the wrong. She asked how the food was so I told her that it was a little bland and she pointed to the spices on the table which were salt and pepper. Then I asked her why it had no meat and she walked away basically so good luck everyone. The rest of the servers were very conscientious of our needs. The restaurant is cute.
