Mr Freeze — Restaurant in Marengo

I love this small mom and Pop restaurant/ice cream shop. Food can be a bit pricey, but the quality makes it worth it. When I get an order that is wrong they always take the steps needed to correct it which was not always the case so that’s a nice change. It’s definitely my number one go to in Marengo. I’m editing my review on February 15, 2025 I have been reading the reviews on here and I am seeing a lot of negative reviews. I know that during an after Covid that they were struggling for a time I also believe that ownership from the father was transferred to the son now that is here say so. I’m not positive if it went to a family member or if it was sold To a different party. What I want to say is that for the 6+ years I’ve lived here in Marengo. This restaurant has seldom let me down. Yes, I have received orders that were incorrect, but I’ve also been able to pick up the phone and call them and at times they will bring out a brand new order if I ask them to and at other times, they just mark it down to give me credit for the meal so I can tell them the next time I order And they will replace that meal for me at no cost I grew up near Ogden Avenue about 15 to 20 miles out of downtown so want to know you’re with that area knows that Ogden Avenue was where you would go to get the best food that is similar to Mr Freeze. You could get a great Italian beef hotdogs chili dogs, Italian sausage, etc. etc. I have always found Mr Freeze’s food to be of high-quality and it taste very decent. For people to remark that they buy their food at Walmart and just dump it in bins is absurd. I would love to see proof of this because there’s no way That that is happening. I’ve also found that their deliveries are very timely. Not once have they ever had a delivery that didn’t come fairly quick. I just think it’s the same that there are so many negative reviews and I don’t understand why they are out there. I understand everybody has their own opinions and taste And perhaps this food just did not mess with their expectations were but I don’t know if they deserved the nasty things that were said about them so I go by my original review I think their food is really good. I love the onion rings the chicken wrap I get mine grilled with honey mustard is delicious. The blue cheeseburger is amazing and the Italian beef is very good. I do think they could update their menu on online with current prices that would be helpful to the people that do use the delivery service again, if you live in the Marango area, there aren’t many restaurants of this type around so if you have a taste for this type of food I would not go by the reviews. I would just give them a chance And if you’re really unhappy with your order, you should call them and let them know and give them a chance to replace the order with the corrections needed. Tried this place out last night since our usual ice cream spot has since closed. Four adults and three young children. We arrived and waited 10 minutes to order because they were filling pickup orders. Not a big deal. When those customers cleared out, we went up to order. Stood at the counter several minutes before we were even acknowledged. Employee #1 couldn't figure out the computer, so hand wrote our order (pretty simple... 1 Jr soft serve with topping, 3 small soft serves with topping and one medium with topping). He read the order back to us and it was correct. Employee #2 stepped in and entered the order into the computer. He couldn't read the handwriting and asked us to clarify the order. He then told us "we don't have flurries in that size". We again clarified we want scoops of soft serve with toppings, not flurries. He gave us our total ($19.69) which seemed high, but we figured maybe a tip was automatically charged. We went to our table and overheard this employee ask if he could go (to which the employee who seemed to be in charge said "not until you fill their order"). Waited 5 minutes before our first ice cream arrived. At this point our toddlers and baby were getting squirmy, so we split the dish between the toddlers. Took another 10 minutes as our orders trickled out one dish at a time. We were still waiting on 2 orders when the lead employee came out with our original ticket to clarify the order. He said "your total will be different" then went to fill the rest of our order. Brought the last 2 ice creams, one of which was not correct, but at this point we decided to just take it because we had to leave soon. We never got our refund. Seems we were overcharged about $5. Ok so first off I'd like to say that the staff was friendly and the place was packed so me giving them a 1 star was not based on that. But rather the quality of the product. Iv been to Mr freeze a lot since moving to this town 7 years ago and I always get the same thing the S mores flurry and I always enjoyed it. So since they changed hands and just reopened I decided I wanted to get my usual. What I got was not even close to what I ordered. It's vanilla ice cream with dipping chocolate that you dip ice cream cones in and I got hard and chunky chocolate in the ice cream and it tasted horrible and the ice cream was off too. There was no hot fudge no fluff and no grahm cracker in it to make it tast like a smore. Not only was mine very disappointing but my wife's was also not right and after waiting over 30 min we just left upset and we barely ate them. I'm sorry to say but I could have gone to McDonald's and paid less money and got what I actually ordered. So I will not be coming back this is not the Mr freeze I remember and I know that things do change and are not exactly the same but this was way way off and not what we ordered. There were other things too that were not good but I was most upset with this one. So beware of what you order. You may get something that's not even near...
