Larry's House of Cakes — Restaurant in Marion

I called to have a cake ready for pickup for my son’s 10th birthday. We have had Larry’s cakes more than a dozen times in the last 2 years. I called to make arrangements 4 days before our pickup date… which isn’t an extensive time for work but it usually seems to be just less than a weeks notice is perfectly fine for picking up. This time I stated that we would like a simple silhouette design on a red velvet. I reassured the employee on the phone if it was a hassle that a regular red velvet with no design was ok too because we do love their cakes and don’t need a design if it causes a hassle. The employee on the phone said I could email a photo of the design idea and I did send that email as soon as we were off the phone. I also explained everything in my email about how we needed it Tuesday and the design could be left to them to explore their own creativity (or make it as simple as possible). I tried to contact Larry’s the following day via phone. Their hours stated they were open at 6:30 AM. I called just after 8am. No answer. No reply to my email still. It’s now Tuesday. My son’s 10th birthday is today. I got a quick cake from krogers frozen section. It’ll do because as previously stated.. we aren’t picky. The cake can’t make the birthday better. But I’m heartbroken that the cake he deserved was not given any priority from the only reputable cake shop around. I had to go to a corporation.

I don’t do reviews but since I didn’t even get a call/email saying “can’t do it” I feel as if others may experience the same. Don’t let your kids birthday fall askew because a cake shop doesn’t...

If you have a low immune system I wouldn’t suggest Larry’s house of cakes. As someone who has just gotten through working there I’m personally concerned with the cross contamination. Phones and dirty rags being set on the same counters where we prepare food. I have seen people put food bare on that same counter without any parchment then prepare to serve. No gloves when handling food ever, normal to see people handle their phones, earbuds, cash/credit cards then handle food with bare hands. I personally wanted to use gloves because it protected my hands from handling food I was just using to handle cash. I was told however that this was okay and was privately told not to wear gloves due to cost. Upon being hired I was warned I was going to get sick. That should not be the case! Anyone who has a food handlers license knows that having one counter in the back where all of those items are set in the same place without wiping/washing is a hazard. We were told to only wipe down the back counters once at the end of the day, and only on the areas where there were any noticeable marks. Boxes that are dropped on the floor? Picked up and used. Big holes in the bags of the cupcakes on the wrack being told that it’s fine and to reuse them. Larry’s house of cakes sweets are good don’t get me wrong, I personally would eat them because I grew up in a rough environment where the option to clean food was non existent, just wanted to warn anyone else out here who could actually be potentially be...

The taste at this point does not matter. No communication with customers!!! We reached out twice to speak with the primary decorator of our cake to ensure we were all on the same page and was told they don't do that. Called me the day Im picking up because they don't know what border to do, red flag! I show up to wrong color, colors wanted not included, the print i adamantly asked for to be small in bottom corner of cake is literally bigger than all of the writing on the cake and the baby name spelled wrong. Then when i said something about the color not being remotely close and colors missing they cant fix it because guess what, the decorator is not there for the THIRD occasion they were needed. They fixed the name by running into the border and called it good. I have had much better hand decorated cakes from Walmart which is very sad to say. This cake was for a specific color schemed baby shower and i could just cry at the horrific mess of a cake I have to show up with. So VERY disappointed in Larry’s and I don't think I will ever order...
