I went to pick up a cake that I orders over a week ago. There was one person in front of me and this woman just started to order a cake and was taking quite a bit of time doing so. The guy next to the female employee behind the counter was fiddling with something at the counter, and when he was done just walked into the back area. After about ten minutes a young lady came from the back area, saw me standing there, and picked up the phone. She started the laborious task of taking a cake order over the phone. The woman in front of me was still ordering at about fifteen minutes into the wait, and there was no sign of the young man that disappeared. The lady on the phone finished her call an departed to the back without saying a word to me. The customer in front of me finished her order and said, she might want to order some cupcakes. They moved to the cupcake display window and the woman taking the order asked if a wanted cupcakes also. I told her I was there to pick up a cake and held up my paid receipt. No sign at all of the other two departed employees. When the girl behind the counter finally finished with and customer in front of me, she asked my name to retrieve the cake I ordered. She brought out 8x4 inch small round cake and opened the lid to the box that was taped at an angle above the cake. I did not know why it was taped that way at first. She opened the box to show the cake and it was beautifully done, the perfect writing, and the small multi-colored flowers around the cake looking almost real. I told her it was perfect. She them proceeded to take the lid of the box and press it all the way down on the box and tape it back up. When I opened up the box at home for my wife, all the flowers on the top of the cake were crushed into the icing, hence the reason the cake was taped a-jar from the start. Considering this small cake cost $54.00 dollars, I was not pleased. Cakes Plus, Inc. in west Laurel Maryland can produce a fantastic looking cake, but the customer service is horrible. Also, the staff are apparently too ignorant about cakes to know not to crush them when boxing them up. A cake twice this size, also with flowers and custom writing at Costco is not quite as fancy, but they will not crush it. And “Plus” it will only set you back less that $20 bucks at Costco. Lesson learned, if you order from this place, you ordeal will be...
Read moreI am writing this in disappointment, as I have been using Cakes Plus for my birthday and other special events for over 15 years. This year, I hit a milestone - I turned 40, and by default, I emailed/called Cakes Plus to make an order. I ordered 2 cakes, and when I called to make the order, the 1st cake pic I sent via email 2 days prior had Hennessy bottles on it. When I called and placed my order, the young lady on the phone told me to bring the Hennessy bottles 48 hours in advance before the cakes needed to be picked up. The cakes needed to be picked on 4/19. Therefore, I attempted to drop off the Hennessy bottles on Thurs. Upon my arrival, I spoke to an older woman, and she told me, 'Oh, they don't do that here. The new girl that you spoke to—she's new and she doesn't know—but I'll hold on to the bottles for you, just in case if they do put them on If they don't, you'll pick them back up when the cakes are ready." 4/19 comes, and my friend comes to deliver the cakes to the venue. She was given the Henny bottles, and she was told not to put the cakes in a seat belt or on the back seat of her car and to put them in the trunk. She goes with the instructions and is on her way to deliver the cakes to the venue. When she opened a trunk, upon discovery, my cake (not the ones requiring the Henny bottles) had the icing fall off on 2 sides. She called me hysterical and crying. I immediately emailed Cakes Plus and alerted them to what happened, and I received a response that stated, "Oh no! I am so sorry that happened. Does she know who gave her the cake so I can verify what was said"? I responded immediately and said, “I don’t have a name, but she had a white T-shirt on, was Caucasian, and had dark black hair and was young. Probably mid-30s” (with a picture of the cake attached). I never received a response. I responded back on 4/22 and stated, “Good morning. I never got a response Saturday.” I received NO response. I responded back later that day and stated, “Even with the hiccup that I had last week, I was told to bring the Hennessy bottles on Thursday, and they would put them on a cake, just to come to find out. They never put them on the cake. They told me the person that said that was a new girl.” – Today is 4/28/2025, and I still have not received a response. I will NEVER order...
Read moreHave been going here for YEARS. And this was the FINAL straw. I get insane cakes in Tampa done with fancy designs and very big cakes for $60 max at a bakery. I sent them a photo of exactly how I wanted the cake done, like exactly to a T (first picture). And it’s not a hard cake to do, vintage heart cake. The size was so small for one, there was glitter on the cake which I didn’t ask for, the red used should’ve been a darker red like wine, and the handwriting should’ve been exactly the way it is in the second photo I sent. I spent 80 DOLLARS on this tiny cake that was done so poorly. Granted it tasted amazing but it should’ve looked better for the $80 I sent on a tiny cake. Will never be getting a cake from here again. The solo cake bakers you can find on TikTok are definitely the way to go if you want it to look good. Highly disappointed and I would’ve just not accepted this cake and asked for my money back if I didn’t have to immediately bring it to the birthday party.
Going off of the review comment from the cakes plus worker: I paid $42 as a down payment which was half and another $40 today. That’s $80 total and some change. And the other cakes in Tampa I get are not from cakes plus they’re from a very small bakery (irrelevant to the review) just expressing the fact that I get an exquisite cake from a small bakery in Tampa for $60 that’s massive compared to a (I thought) reliable huge bakery in Maryland that gave me a tiny bootleg cake for $80. If your bakers couldn’t make it look as good as the photo you should've said you couldn’t do it. Also the size wasn’t the main issue, but I’m not a baker I don’t know what 6x8 or whatever means. You should’ve just let me know what the size was going to be if I wanted it the size of the picture. And all of that doesn’t make up for the fact that it was in an incorrect shade of red, had glitter on it, and the handwriting was sloppy and not in the font requested. When I showed my friends/family the picture of what I wanted compared to the cake it was a laughing stock. At least make your prices match your work. That cake should’ve costed $40...
