Olde Towne Smokehouse — Restaurant in Mechanicsville

Ok so we got food from this place like 5 times and 4 out of those 5 our ENTIRE ORDER WAS SCREWED UP!!! But what’s MUCH MUCH WORSE, is that the LAST 3 TIMES, THERE WAS AN ENORMOUS amount of CLEAR, ROCK HARD CARTILAGE!!! It was DISGUSTING TO EVEN LOOK AT!! THAT was our LAST TRY! They DESPERATELY NEED SOME COOKS WHO KNOW HOW TO WORK WITH BBQ!!! * in response to the person from Smoke House who responded. In case you couldn’t tell, I’m old school. I don’t worry about a persons “feelings” if I use “all caps”. It’s simply a way to “emphasize the word”. Besides that, I never said a word to anyone there, just that you got my order wrong….again…..and please fix it. I did not yell, raise my voice or even become rude with absolutely anyone there. Perhaps I should’ve, at least THEN, your accusation would have merit. The fact is, that you’re meat is extremely high in fat content, and from my experience, I’ve had to spend a LOT of time cutting as much of the fat out as I could, and that HARD, CLEAR cartridge, or whatever it was, that was gross. Wonder if there’s a weight involved when they measure out how much meat to put on each sandwich? Who knows. But I do not appreciate the accusation of being rude, or in ANY way “non-level headed”. Yum and Wow!

Great food = yum, efficient & friendly staff = wow! We were excited to try Olde Towne Smokehouse based on a friend’s recommendation. Had a delightful lunch with plenty of leftovers. As we don’t live in the area, I called in advance to confirm hours just to make sure they were open when we planned to visit. Phone was answered by a friendly, professional and helpful employee. When we visited, we were greeted and promptly had our order taken even with a full line of people ahead of us. It seemed the majority of the folks were there for take out so I was thankful that there was still ample seating inside. We parked behind the building (out front was full) and as we walked up to it, we could smell the delicious smoker working its magic.

My husband and I ordered too much so we could taste multiple dishes at restaurant and take some home for the next day (equally good the next day too). Everything was spot on: chicken, turkey sandwich, mac & cheese, baked beans, fries, cornbread. Good smoky flavor with perfect amount of seasoning. Excellent brisket, sausage & cornbread . The pulled pork, apples and sweet potato casserole were solid. I went for the grand opening, and despite being swamped, staff was friendly overall.

UPDATED The first review was from my first visit on 5/31. Unfortunately, I came a 2nd time on 6/5….they were out of 2 items, cashier hilariously & unnecessarily lied to say they were out of another (right in front of me, the cook said it was ready, however, she admitted to him she didn’t know how to choose the option on her register/computer…..she then turned to tell me it wasn’t ready). Also, they didn’t have cash and when I reluctantly attempted to pay by card, she couldn’t locate my order. To be fair, she was friendly, but the staff was VERY unprepared for fundamental food service.

Update #2 Since the 1st update, I’ve come back twice and the food somehow improved (already great) and despite the one silly service gaffe (while it was a lie, it was a “white lie” & not mean-spirited), the service has been almost as great. I give them a “mulligan” since the staff is still learning, but they are as friendly a restaurant as I’ve ever seen! Overall, I’m reviewing based on my last two...
