Upon arriving, I noticed an area of covered parking that was lit up and had tables. There on these tables were various BBQ sauces and rolls of paper towels. The indoor seating and area for customers was quite limited, but nicely decorated. There was no line, but I saw around six or seven customers in the approximately 30 minutes that I was there. (Thursday afternoon rush hour time) The young man at the cash register seemed new to his job, as his demeanor was "all serious business." The young lady that appeared shortly afterwards was not so "rigid" and a bit more personable. I told them that I was there for the brisket only. The young man offered me a free sample of brisket, and the young lady brought me out a small paper cup containing a variety of cuts from at least three different briskets. One sample was a "burnt end" that was cooked to perfection. The aroma of the samples was quite "briskety" if there is such a word. The first thing I noticed was the nice, very heavy bark, which would easily make one who LUVS brisket start howling ;) That one sample piece was the best burnt end that I have EVER had from an Arizona BBQ restaurant, bar none. It was SERIOUSLY good... too salty but really good nonetheless. It had a "borderline" TWIBB flavor too! (Triple Wow In Beef Bark) Another piece in that cup was tasty, but a bit disappointing due to having collagen that was not yet turned into gelatin. (A bit stretchy) A third piece in that same free sample cup was overcooked, in that the gelatin was gone, making it a tad dry and was falling apart. This was a serious sampling of what Nate's BBQ Brisket is all about! I was convinced it was good stuff, and purchased two pounds of sliced brisket. Per my request, one pound was moist point and the other was a pound of lean flat. The "Star of the Show" at Big Nate's BBQ was a fellow named Eric. We exchanged cell numbers and chatted. (Brisket talk) Upon taking the container filled with brisket home to my family, the aroma filled my truck, making it hard to get home due to the long drive (41 miles) and heavy, stop-and-go traffic. I was tempted to pull over somewhere and "dive in" but I knew that my family was waiting, so I waited as well. FYI... We are brisket "snobs" having eaten luscious smoked beef from Aaron Franklin's, Terry Black's, and Louie Mueller's. (Three Top Pillars of Texas BBQ) I have personally been grilling for over 40 years and smoking brisket for 7 more years. So... we are some serious "judges" when it comes to smoked beef trying brisket from nearly 25 Arizona BBQ restaurants. The two pounds were above average for Arizona brisket per us three "judges." BOTTOM LINE: Big Nate's BBQ is right up there with the current BBQ leaders in Arizona in regards to smoked brisket, and with a few minor changes could easily be number...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreOkay, Iām reluctant to write a review on this little gem because I want to keep it all to myself! But Iām in a selfless mood . . . So here it goes! From a couple (of foodies) that eat out everyday . . . This place is the cats meow!
Thereās one or two cons . . . But nothing that cannot be worked around. I will save those for the end.
The list of pros are bountiful! So, please bear with me! We wanted to sample most everything on our first visit. We ordered a lot. The service was friendly, accommodating and quick. The condiments were plentiful with 5 different bbq sauces (but who needs bbq sauce when the meat is smoked to perfection!). They also had pickles - which we overindulged because they were fabulous as well as pickled onions and two other items - maybe jalapeƱos. We had the Big Nate Plate which consisted of chicken, pulled pork, pork ribs, sausage, brisket. For our sides we chose mac-n-cheese and cornbread. We also got a side of Turkey and we were talked into getting a 1.8 pound beef rib. Everything was flavorful and moist - absolutely nothing wrong with any of it! But OH MY GOSH . . . Let me repeat . . . OH MY GOSH!!! . . . That beef rib was to die for and Iām not even a fan of beef ribs! From the bark to the moist fall off the bone meat . . . Iāve never had a rib taste so good! Mind you it wasnāt cheap . . . But it was well worth it and could easily feed two (maybe three) people. They only serve the beef ribs Friday and Saturdays and sometimes Mondays if they have them leftover from the weekend. The mac-n-cheese was very good as well as everything else we had. One of the employees (may have been an owner - who knows) came out to ask what we thought. I told him the only complaint I had was that the baby back ribs were a teensy bit dry . . . He said he should have given us the St. Louis ribs instead because they are always moister. So, next time we will be trying the St Louis ribs as well as the bbq beans. But our favorite by far is that giant beef rib!
Now, keep in mind there is no indoor seating. They have benches and tables set up under the covered parking and they have a giant portable swamp cooler. We sat outside at around 5:00 p.m. and it was a bit warm. But it did start cooling down. I imagine they must do a lot of take-out/to-go orders. Also, they only have cans of soda and bottles of water. Iām not sure if they sell alcohol. The employee/maybe owner offered me another can of soda and also brought me a cup of ice - that really helped. Then he went above and beyond and brought us out a bunch of bones for our dogs.
This place is really trying and it shows in the quality of not only their food but their service as well.
Big Nateās Family BBQ is definitely giving JalapeƱo Buckās & WoodBarn a run for their money!
Go check them out . . . You wonāt be...
