I eat out daily for the past several years and find places that execute well on service and product. I've been coming to Antigua Guatemala for some time now because the food is ok and relative close by on my way to work. I will take the time to inform the public of how disturbed and insulted I was by the server and manager. I always order the same house special that includes eggs, skirt steak, beans and cheese.I always ask to replace the blended beans with refried beans and the white cheese with Fried cheese and a frozen lemonade. 1st my frozen lemonade was brought watery and not frozen. I mentioned to the server that I had asked for a frozen lemonade he's response was you want more ice. I just repeated I frozen lemonade. Reluctant that I would get my lemonade watered down with additional ice, I reiterated a frozen lemonade. The server then brought me my food and as I was on the phone I started eating a took a piece of the edge of a piece of cheese on the plate I noticed they didn't bring me the fried cheese. I called over the server and I mentioned this, his response was that yes you are right but since I had taken a piece of the cheese the kitchen would not accept the replacement. At this point I felt shocked and insulted. But rather than continue working myself up I tried to let it go.but noticed that a discussion between two servers took place in front of me and the server that originally took my order agreed that I had order the fried cheese. I thought at this point the server that brought me the wrong order would do what was right but eventually he didn't. My biggest concern was that if given that I would have never taken a piece what would they have done with that cheese. So was inclined to ask and his response was throw it away. So why the big deal? I asked and he mentioned that the kitchen would not accept. At this point, I could not eat and asked for the bill. I left most of plate untouched. The server brought the bill with put an apology and without an attempt to to do the right thing. I spoke with the manager but the manager was worse that the server. He did not care to remedy the issue and charged me the full plate. I was robbed $17. I tried to make sure with the manager that there was no misunderstanding and that he was definetly goong to tale that stance. This is absolutely the worst experience I have ever had in my entire life. My business philosophy although not shared with some, depicts a different scenario to have taken place, perhaps acknowledging the fault on the server, considering making the customer happy and taking care of the issue right away. But this was a disastrous and disappointing lack of professionalism on behalf of Antigua Guatemala administration. **7 years later I thought id give them another try, dispointed. Will start with the check. Takeout after $50 tab,10%gratuity required. Even will getting the order wrong.Yes they got the order wrong. This company policy is not comunicated prior or after order. You just need to review the receipt to know what transpired. Their famous fried cheese is extinct. No longer an item of theirs that was signature to this establishment. As far as remedial attempt, management falls short of resolutions. Still a 1 star. I gave 3 on the food becuase their flank steak is...
Read moreLet me start by saying that when I review a restaurant my main focus is the food, then the service and last the building/location. With that said , the food did not meet my expectations. I was looking for authentic Guatemalan food, but was quite disappointed. There was only one dish we try that was to par and that was Carne Adobada(Marinated meat) with freshly made tortillas. Another item that was good was the Horchata. It was refreshing and had a good size. We came hungry and since we live far away, we took advantage of the moment and try several dishes, we even order some to take home because we wouldn’t had time to eat it all at the restaurant. We ordered so many things that it would take me a while to describe what I didn’t like about the remaining of the dishes. Instead I would like to mention the one item in the menu that is a staple in Guatemala and that is the Tamal. A corn dough which has in the center either pork or chicken topped with a delicious sauce. Well the sauce and the traditional flavor was missing in the one dish I came to the restaurant for. I was so disappointed, and sadly was my main entree so needless to say I left the restaurant hungry. As you can already guess, the food I took home wasn’t any better and was discarded. What was a lot better was the service. The lady who took care of us was super nice and was the one who suggested almost all the dishes I took home. However the place was almost closing and she would take time away from our table to finish with the other tables. This cause us to request the assistance of another server to help us obtain the check and the food we had ordered to take home. Thus the reason for a 3 stars for the service. Now to the last part of my review, which is the location/building. The restaurant is located right on the main street so must be careful with traffic when entering the parking. The inside of the restaurant was clean and had plenty of tables to serve large parties, but didn’t like the atmosphere. Therefore base on my experience I will not be returning and would definitely...
Read moreMy nationality is Guatemalan, I've wanted to come by here for quite some time as I had heard the food is amazing; well I finally did & it lived up to all my expectations.
upon arriving the parking was limited so we waited for a parking space, typical of MIA not a big surprise
we walked in & immediately was given a table
I knew what I wanted ( usually look at the menu before dropping in a restaurant) my husband and i ordered "especial de la casa" (house special) my son chicken & fries
our order came out approx 7-10 minutes after we placed it & it looked like a typical Guatemalan breakfast plate: eggs, cream, cheese, steak, plantains & refried beans our tortillas took longer to get to our table (I can eat without, my husband cannot. He became a bit frustrated as his food was getting cold while we waited) BUT as soon as those bad boys came out we both looked at each other and he shut his mouth, THEY ARE HOMEMADE & huge we got 2 per order I ate 1 which was more than enough.
SAVED THE BEST FOR LAST: the food brought me back to my childhood when my parents and I would visit Guatemala. The house special was savory the cream & beans were the best & with every bite i could envision myself sitting at the table in hotel Mari in huehue or sitting in my uncle's house in the city. It hit me then that it is no wonder that there are many nationalities that step into this resturant. I heard different Spanish like Cuban, Colombian, central American accents and English being spoken. It lived up to what i thought we walked out satisfied and our bellies full.
This place is a MUST...
