It is a shame how absolutely horrible service has gotten. This used to be my family's go-to Chinese restaurant, but after our experience yesterday, Feb14, we will never order from here again.
I called to place an order for takeout. The phone number printed on their menus is out of service. The second number provided online immediately hangs up after ringing once. This happened no less than 12 times before my phone call finally went through. When I was placing my order, three times I had to repeat myself because the kid on the other end of the phone was talking to other people, telling me "Sorry, what did you say? Sorry, can you repeat that again?" multiple times. I should have canceled my order then. (Not surprisingly, we ended up having a whole dish missing from our bag)
When we went to pick it up, the kid at the front asked for payment and tried to swipe our card, for an order that was already pre-paid. "Oh, yeah, look at that, it is paid for already. Oops"
We get home and after seeing that a $10 dish we paid for was not included, we attempted to call to get a refund. It took 30 minutes of dialing (rings once and then disconnects) before our call finally went through. The same kid answered and said "Can you please hold for a moment?". It is 20 MINUTES before he comes back and says "How can I help you?"
I told him that we had paid for an item that was not included and I would like a refund. He told me he would give me restaurant credit for a future order. I told him no, I would like to be refunded back on my credit card. He says oh ok, let me check. I asked him what was going on at the restaurant because it is nearly impossible to call and said that the number printed on the menus is out of service. He told me the number on the menu wasn't wrong (!?) and they only have two lines. I gave him my card number for the refund and asked when I should expect the refund to show, and then he hung up on me mid-sentence, mumbling something as he hung up.
That was the last straw for me to write this restaurant off. I don't know what has changed, but this is not the same House of Chong we used to go to. I will never be back, and I will no longer recommend this restaurant to...
Read moreSome treasures are hidden; others stand proudly in plain sight, waiting for the right moment to capture your heart. The House of Chong in Middletown, NJ, is firmly in the latter category—a beacon of authenticity and warmth on the south side of Route 35 in the Union Square Plaza. Why it took me so long to step through its doors, I may never know. But what I do know is that from the moment I arrived, I felt like I had stumbled upon something truly special.
The ambiance speaks volumes before a single bite is taken. Rich, traditional décor sets the stage for an experience steeped in heritage and hospitality. This isn’t just dining—it’s immersion. The harmony of the space is matched only by the warmth of the welcome. Michael, the gracious host, greeted me with a genuine smile, and I found my place at the bar, drawn by an atmosphere both convivial and refined.
The bartender, a true maven of both spirits and suggestions, guided me toward a meal that would soon become a memory worth savoring. The General Tso’s Chicken, crisp and glistening in its perfect glaze, arrived after an elegant prelude of crisp wonton chips and a soul-warming cup of soup. Every bite sang with balance—sweet, spicy, tender, and bold. A cold Sapporo beer, its golden effervescence cutting through the richness of the dish, proved to be the perfect companion to this culinary symphony.
And if the flavors weren’t enough to impress, the value sealed the deal. The portions were generous—hearty plates piled high with care, ensuring no guest left hungry. The prices? More than reasonable, making every dollar stretch further without ever compromising on quality.
House of Chong is more than a restaurant; it is a testament to tradition, an embrace of flavor, and a sanctuary for those who seek excellence in both cuisine and service. To dine here is to be welcomed as family, to be fed as royalty, and to leave already longing for...
Read moreJust left The House of Chong. The place was about a third of the way full when we got there at about 3/4 full and hour later. I just left after waiting an hour, not from when we got there but after we placed our order because the food still wasn’t out. The waiter didn’t even come back and so much is fill the water glass once. In fact The guy who is bringing out the appetizers to the other tables, which seemed to be the only food go out being eggrolls and soup, ignored me when I asked for a refill of the water. We have two young kids who wouldn’t wait anymore so I turned it into it to go order and 20 minutes later my wife is still waiting for the food. I get it it’s Christmas Eve but an hour and a half waiting for chicken and broccoli and pepper steak is ridiculous
OK to finish the story. My wife finally got the food half an hour after we left, so that makes an hour and a half after ordering. The guy did the right thing and gave it to us for free so I will give him credit and am torn about complaining. But when she got it home we had three orders that they didn’t get right and only gave you one side of rice. Kudos to him for eating the bill but got to say I’ll...
