My partner and I visited this establishment while travelling and visiting the area. What started out as a search for food along our travel quickly turned into one of the worst demonstrations of service and humanity.
We entered Slater's around 2 in the afternoon ready to order. There was a man ahead of us in line, but he was the only other customer in the establishment. I didn't think anything of it at the time until the clerk and customer began having a discussion for approximately 5 minutes while I was the only customer in line. They began speaking politics which normally does not impact my day. What truly made this experience so awful and a clear display of hate was they began talking about the George Floyd case and called him a thug, and were calling people of color idiots who memorialize him Citing the statue of memoriam as ways to express his dissatisfaction. This man went on for minutes engaged in racially centered hate speech with the person at the counter, all the while looking over at me each time he said something controversial. Making direct eye contact with me. For context, I am a person of color, the only person of color in the establishment at the time. My partner is white, and she upon hearing this conversation had to discreetly approach me and ask if we wanted to leave, seeing how displeased I was and while also feeling so uncomfortable in her own experience. I of course said, "yes", and we put what we had grabbed back. I refused to let the man draw a reaction out of me because that's what people want when they do things so blatantly like that.
The behavior was so clearly internally known as wrong by this deli clerk. So much so that upon our exiting the shop, about three minutes later that as we are sitting in the car searching somewhere else to go, the deli clerk came outside and said we could still come in and order. They were not coming out to apologize in an authentic way or to acknowledge the error in their ways from a human perspective. It's truly sad that this behavior still exists in our service community and with such open disregard for patrons.
I would not suggest Slater's deli to anyone and I would recommend doing business elsewhere. We found a small business, Gigiās Pizza that also does great hoagies about 10...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreNew to the area and was recommended to try my first Pork Roll or Taylor Ham @ Slaters Deli
I wanted it as the Locals have it, S P K with Egg and Cheese Let me say, i could certainly get used to eating this every day! The flavors coming off the Ham, combined with the perfectly cooked egg and that melted cheese and fresh Bagel. Truly a delicious meal and it was gigantic! What an incredible idea! š” Makes me feel bad for the rest of the country that doesn't know what they're missing.
Now service wise, the gentleman that i think runs the shop was super welcoming and awesome (don't get it with sardines š) and we decided to dine in. You can take it to go, and parking is right in front for convenience
The whole team was super awesome and had a home-y vibe like having lunch with your badass aunt and older sister while they fired ya up some delicious food.
Definitely will be returning for more Pork Rolls and to experience more of the menu, thanks for allowing these out of towners have an incredible first experience on a New...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreEverything was fresh, quality was good and people were friendly, no complaints there. However, definitely won't return! First of all, no prices were posted. My brother and I shared a whole (#1?) , each had a 20 oz soda and shared a bag of chips. It came to just over $29š²!! It did have about 2 inches of ham piled on, and then about a ¼ inch total of salami, pepperoni, and cheese. Tomatoes were also pretty thinly sliced. So there was more than I could eat in one shot, but it wasn't a balanced sandwich. Definitely overwhelmed with hamš. Yes, I understand everything has gone up, but a $22 sub! This was my first north of $20 sandwich.
Hey, it's their store and they've been there a long long time, but there are plenty of good quality sub shops in NJ using premium ingredients that are FAR less costly. I guess Middletown being a Manhattan bedroom community has deeper...
