The Pub at Frog Hollow — Restaurant in Middletown

My wife and I moved to Middletown 21 years ago. We have had a tough time finding good consistent food at local restaurants and have tried pretty much every one of them in the area. We had gone to Frog Hollow Pub when we first moved here, but didn’t find it to be anything special. A new owner and management around 5 years ago for the pub restaurant and bar has changed all of that.

We went to the Pub Happy Hour during the week and ordered some snacks and had a few cocktails. The Bartender/Waitress Alicia was very friendly and knowledgeable and knew how to mix a proper cocktail. The food we order on our first visit was surprisingly excellent especially considering this is supposed to be bar food fair. Everything was fresh and executed precisely. The Turkey Club would rival the best I’ve ever eaten. The turkey is roasted fresh (no turkey luncheon meat here) the bacon wasn’t greasy and it was crisp, all ingredients were distributed evenly (generally speaking most club sandwiches have a lump of meat in the middle and the outer parts are primarily bread). The bread was toasted, but you could tell that the bread was fresh because it didn’t crumble apart when you took a bite of the sandwich. We also ordered the Truffle Garlic Fries and the Stromboli Eggs Rolls, which were both cooked perfectly. The Stromboli Egg Rolls were made in house and are addicting (I’ve ordered them every time I've gone since my first visit). We ordered the Angus Burger which was delicious, the beef burger tasted great and fresh; true Angus Beef, the components on the sandwich were again evenly distributed. Wednesday is wing night; I am not a true fan of wings in general, but because the level of excellence in their food, I had to try them. The wings were large, super crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside, so they exceeded my expectations greatly.

Chef Marie came out to say hello and we told her how pleased we were with everything. She was friendly and thanked us for noticing the care they take in preparing their meals. She runs a tight ship and I can say the kitchen staff all work well together. When the kitchen bell rings your food comes out immediately, so it’s hot like it should be.

We have since been back 6 times and the food and service are consistently great no matter who is working that day. Other food we have tried, Flash Fried Brussel Sprouts with an Asian sauce and the Giant Pretzel. Both were great. It’s hard to find a place these days that is serving anything near this quality and with the shortage of experienced help these day, this has become my go to place. I only wish I had tried it sooner. I live in the area and heard good things about recent management changes. It's changed hands quite a few times in the last few years, so I decided to check it out. I was very happy with my experience, and return frequently to try the craft beer and listen to live music on Friday and Saturday nights. The bartenders are friendly and personable, and I've heard very good things about the fall-inspired craft cocktails that they've just added to the menu. The Pub is now featuring "elevated pub fare" that can't be beat. The Asian-inspired brussel sprouts are amazing, as are the whiskey buffalo wings with house-made blue cheese. These appetizers and some others are available for lower price during Happy Hour, which is Monday from Friday from 4-7, and domestic drafts are just $2 at that time. I often order the whiskey buffalo chicken sandwich, and it is to die for. The salads are very satisfying and come with a tasty selection of dressings made in house. If you're looking for entrees, the bar harbor chicken, which is topped with lump crab meat and lobster bisque, is excellent, and they recently added turkey pot pie, which is just about the perfect comfort food. We have been here a number of times since the new ownership took over and have consistently been delighted with the food, ambience and the service. But especially the FOOD! Did I mention that already? The wings, the pulled pork sandwich and even the brussels sprouts were delicious! I am also a french fry kinda guy and the fries were done perfectly.
