August 2025 Update: THEY HAVE COMFY CHAIRS! I miss the days when most coffee shops had comfortable seating for when you just wanted to read or enjoy a coffee with a friend. Now, Bean Here has brought back comfy seating. To my knowledge, the Bean Here locations are the only shops that provide comfy seating (the drive through location has some provided from the shop and some provided by the bank; the lab location has some provided in the loft).
If you are looking for good coffee in Sienna, Bean Here is the way to go. Bean Here ensures you get fresh, quality roasted beans for every cup. The Lab location on McKeever has the commercial roaster that roasts fresh beans that then have the optimal rest time before they are freshly ground for your cup of coffee. I've been at the Lab during roasting, it smells heavenly! While national chains focus on making every cup taste the same year round, Bean Here focuses on getting the beans 'in season." So, your summer cup will taste slightly different than your winter cup because the variety used will be the one in season. Mike (the owner) is very knowledgeable regarding coffee, and is very open with talking coffee with his customers. I've learned so much from him. Bean Here has been very active in community, often helping during times of need. For example, post Harvey, much of Sienna was without power, but Bean Here had power. They opened up, gave cool water to everyone, not just paying customers, and let people change their phones. Bean Here has also supported local small businesses. In the beginning, this shop was one of the few places that regularly sold Sienna Sauce; now Sienna Wings is housed in the attached Commissary. Bean Here is locally owned, so your purchase fully supports our local community rather than having some of the proceeds fueling economies in other cities and states. The pastries are supplied daily by a locally owned baker, so they are fresh and delicious (plus again... supporting the local economy). Next door, with a door connecting the two, is the Commissary, which offers additional food items. You can order from the Commissary menu at Bean Here, and they will bring your order to your table in Bean Here (Mike is a co-owner of the Commissary). So if you are looking for coffee in Sienna, don't overlook this local shop that is a local favorite.
Original Review: The default is to compare coffee shops with Starbucks. Here goes. Starbucks has more customization options and more roast varieties. Bean Here has better tasting coffee, and I like that I am supporting a local owner and not a corporation. Plus, you can actually find a place to park (unlike the Sienna Starbucks). Both shops have friendly service and comparable prices. Hands down, I prefer Bean Here. They don't default to 'to-go' serving. If you say your coffee is 'for here' you get an actual ceramic cup of coffee, not a paper cup. The coffee is rich tasting and smooth. They have a simple rewards program (enter your phone number...no card or app to keep up with). I haven't tried the pastries, but they are significantly larger than Starbucks and are fresh (not frozen and reheated). The only downside is that I have missed out on many months of good coffee because I waited so long to try them. I really wish I had tried them when they...
ย ย ย Read moreHad a gift card so I decided to check them out. I had drip coffee. It was good, but I wish it were hotter. The staff is very nice and accommodating. The issues I have are these: the door, the table where sugars are, and the cup the coffee is served in. Firstly, the door is very hard to open and it does not open fully. As there are 2 handicap spots in front of the shop I'd expect them to welcome people with disabilities or families with strollers. Anyone with mobility issues or small children would find that door very difficult to manage, possibly injuring themselves. It seems jammed in the mechanism at the top. Secondly, the wood next to the sugar bar is warped from a previous spill I'm assuming. This almost tipped my cup over the first time I set my cup next to the sugar. It's a spill hazard that a place with hot drinks should address. Lastly, The paper cup I received dribbled and dripped with every sip I took all three times I went this week. So this is a design flaw in the cup or lid. I saw the last person making my drink adjust the lid a couple times, so I wonder if they are aware of this flaw in the cup design. I know all of this sounds picky, but after three days of struggling with a door my disabled mother would not be able to open herself, trying to dodge spill traps, and dealing with sticky hands and stained clothing It's gotten to be too irritating to want to return. $4.44 for a drip coffee should not come with...
ย ย ย Read moreThe cortado: It was on the more expensive side for a cortado (~$4.30 total), but it is a very large portion compared to most. There are some almost toffee notes, which is pleasant. It's very light bodied, and had a lot of milk so it ended just being kind of bland. It was like a cross between a cortado and a latte. Maybe it would have been good, but the flavor just wasn't present. Some points for presentation though.
The shop itself: Kind of in a random location, but that does mean it fills an area that is pretty lacking in coffee shops. The atmosphere is pretty cozy, with plenty of art, plants, merchandise, and games to catch the eye. Overall it is a very pleasant environment to work or chill. There are nice table hooks underneath all the tables, and a few outlets along the walls. I like it. The staff is also very friendly, which is greatly appreciated.
The bottom line: If I was in the area, I wouldn't hesitate to pop in for a place to study, work, or meet up. There are a good amount of coffee and tea options. I just didn't really enjoy my cortado, and wouldn't come here if I was looking for a good...
