It's been a quite a while since I've visited this particular Whitey's on the eastern side of the Mississippi River in Illinois. After finishing up a meal at Los Agaves and an errand that took me into Illinois for the afternoon, I decided to cap of my time on that side of the river with a little treat at this location.
The most striking thing about this Whitey's is what doesn't set it apart from the other locations. The exterior is much the same as other free-standing Whitey's locations - white brick, big red sign, small parking lot adjacent. The same goes for the interior - one big long counter, freezers across the space with treats to buy and take home, etc. Really not much more to say, it's a typical location.
I was somewhat at a loss for what to get and as I pondered a scoop or two for myself, one of the teenage girl employees came out and asked if I needed help. I actually did need to talk through my thoughts with her, such as things were for me at this point in the evening. At some point in our conversation, she brought up that they still had pumpkin ice cream available - she even let me try it! While I love me nearly all pumpkin spice treats, that wasn't doing in for me this evening. However, the ice cream attendant did make a great suggestion - put graham central station on the bottom, then something else on the top. It would be like a graham cracker pie crust with whatever underneath it! With this thought in hand, I got a scoop of graham central station with strawberry cheesecake.
The rest of the transaction went as swiftly and painlessly as possible. Turns out this Whitey's, like so many other places these days, had google pay as an option. I was able to use my phone to complete the transaction. The cashier mentioned the sometimes have trouble with IHMVCU cards using google or apple pay, so I was pleased when my card went through without any issue.
The ice cream, as I'm sure you're wondering, was delicious. I think I've had a combination of graham central station with lemon custard before (during the summer) and remember it being really tasty. I'm going to have to remember this combination, as well - kind of felt like a strawberry cheesecake with a graham cracker crust!
Anyhow, if you haven't been to a Whitey's, you really should try it - even in the middle of winter. Thanks for continuing to be a great Quad Cities institution, Whitey's...
Read moreI made it to Whitey's Ice Cream during my visit to the Quad Cities, and wow - this place truly deserves its legendary status! Everything I'd heard about this family-owned gem was spot on. The shop itself is exactly what you'd expect from reading about it - spotlessly clean with that classic white and red aesthetic that makes you feel like you've stepped back in time to when ice cream parlors were special places. The staff was incredibly friendly and clearly took pride in what they were serving. I ordered a cone with three different varieties of ice cream, and I was blown away by both the quality and the portion size. The scoops were absolutely huge - definitely more than generous! Each flavor had such a rich, creamy taste that you can tell comes from using quality ingredients and traditional methods. The ice cream was so delicious that I found myself savoring every bite. You can really taste the difference that comes from a place that's been perfecting their craft since 1933. My only "complaint"? I wish I lived in the area... though maybe that's actually a good thing for my waistline, because I'd definitely be coming here at least once a week if I were local! If you're in the Quad Cities area, Whitey's Ice Cream is an absolute must-visit. It's clear why this place has such a devoted following and why it's been named "Best in the Midwest." Some traditions are worth preserving, and Whitey's is definitely...
