Carmela's Pizzeria — Restaurant in Monroe Township

I came here because I saw the one picture on Google of the deep dish, in hopes of finding a true Chicago Style deep dish pizza. I want to say the pizza was VERY GOOD!!! I ordered extra cheese, grilled onions, mushrooms, and peppers (which unfortunately were not grilled) with pepperoni Chicago Style Deep Dish. The food really was good, no complaints on taste. I have to be honest and say it is NOT a true deep dish at all. I have watched plenty of videos and I have been searching all of Jersey for an authentic Chicago deep dish, but to no avail. I have 2 complaints, that he uses canned mushrooms, its NOT the same taste as just using regular mushrooms like baby bellas. That the pizza was 32 dollars is Absurd, it's just dough, sauce, and cheese, with a little bit of toppings. The prices are just getting outrageous anymore, I can make 3 pies for the same price at home. We are former NYers and have been living out of state for a long time. We came in from out of town to visit family and stopped in on our first night. We were the last customers of the night and got in right before closing time. Pizza was great as was the chicken Parm. We joked that we drove in 600 miles just for the pizza and service was personable and friendly like family. No pressure on us to finish, did not clean up around us and when I offered to pay first so he could close out the register he said “eat first. No worries. As long as the lights are on we are open.” On our way out, he came out and said hold on a minute. Went in there looking for higher expectations because of the reviews but not what I got. I think I was upset because the first time I went there and place was closed but was advertised it was opened. Didn't find much variety of pizza and what I did try was not as flavorful as I had hoped. Tried the mussels expecting fresh ones but only to be served frozen new Zealand like many pizzeria serve.
