Xcaret Grill Mexican Restaurant — Restaurant in Montevallo

This place has an excellent location but appears to be struggling already. We had dinner here twice and both times, the food was just ok. To be clear, the staff are competent and friendly. My issue is strictly with food quality and the price for same. The chips and cheese dip were cold. The tamales had almost no filling, the steak taco salad was mostly green peppers. Everything had the appearance of stretching ingredients to make it work rather than a restaurant you paid to eat at. It took two visits for me to notice, but they also pass on their card processing fee directly to the customer. Any place can have an off night or a hard month - but that was it for me. I'm already paying $15+ for an entree, plus a healthy tip (because the staff deserves it). IMO, you can either be expensive OR mediocre, not both. We have came three times now. The first experience on opening week would have been 5 stars. However the two subsequent visits are like to a different restaurant. First of all, there is NO alcohol in the margaritas, they told me to order “strong”, so you pay even more just to get alcohol included (and it’s then normal, not strong). The service is subpar, they have no idea what they are doing, they are slow, some don’t know English. The food choices are a little different than your run-of-the-mill menu, and it does taste good. We celebrated my son's graduation her because Zapopan was swamped. They were very nice to accommodate our party. The service was a little slow. The alleged fresh quacomole was not fresh avocado quacomole. The staff was very friendly. Some food was good and some was nor. Don't go to a Mexican restaurant and order a hamburger. I might try them again. They don't have blue margaritas and don't get the Hawaiian margaritas without...
