Anytime I travel I tend to look for other restaurants that serve different gyro styles. Gyros are probably my single favorite food over all others. They rank up with pizza and hamburgers for "exploration eating" in which I try different styles from various regions. I'm always looking for the best I've had.
This love of gyros stems directly from visits to Blue Goose from the time I was a baby. It's likely been five or six years since I've been, because I don't live in the area anymore, but anywhere I move I have to find the restaurant with gyros closest in style to Blue Goose. They will always be the benchmark. I know they probably use the same recipe as many others, but somehow they're still better than almost all others I've had.
This is the ONLY restaurant in the Mt Vernon area that I miss in any way. In a town dominated by chain restaurants, it's a little gem. I was very young when the older Jimmie passed, but I can still picture him more clearly than most of my own late family members. I'm very happy that the son has kept it going so that I can visit when I come through town and I hope he knows how special that little olace is to a lot of people (I assume the son still runs it, it's...
Read moreAmazing. I order two Gyros. Bite number one and I fell in love. As my taste buds mad love to this sweet food of the gods I lost myself and reminisced of a time where the world was at peace. As I looked down and realized I had devoured the Gyro I almost fell into a depressed state realizing this experience had almost came to an end. Then all of the sudden my second Gyro arrived at the table. I felt like a young boy on Christmas morning. As the second Gyro met my mouth I thought I heard what could be described as angels singing in the distance. As I finished the second Gyro I felt comfortable to say that I could now die a happy man. I would recommend this restaurant in...
Read moreExcellent Greek food. Small menu - you come here for the gyros- they are fresh and very tasty. But, you shouldn’t leave before trying the baklava. The owner makes it fresh every day and it’s his mother’s family recipe. I’m from Chicago and have had a lot of Greek food. This was by far the best baklava I’ve ever had. I was only here the one time and it’s obviously a local favorite - several customers stopped by just to get the baklava. Try to get there well before closing, because they can sell out. I enjoyed talking to the owner- he cares about the community and the...
