If you don't want to read the rest of this review please just trust the first line. Had been looking for vegetarian/vegan restaurants in Nashville and initially the Southern V wasn't even on my radar because it was a bit far from my hotel. The decision to go here ultimately ended up being because a lot of the other places I looked at were closed on a Sunday afternoon. I have to thank all my lucky stars that it worked out that way because missing out on this spot would have been nothing short of tragic!
So we walk in around 1:30pm and already there is a decent line formed at the counter and quite a few people already eating. The way it works is you order first and then seat yourself wherever you want. They have a couple of long tablea for groups and the rest are for either couple or groups of 4. The place is not huge but I'd say it could fit about 30-35 people without being jam-packed. Waited in line about 10-15 mins before we could place our order. The menu as you must have get was vegan versions of southern comfort classics. We decided to go with the Nashville hot chikn, Nashville hot chikn strips and the chickpea tuna melt. The entrées came with 2 sides and the sandwich with 1. Got a combination of mac n cheese, black and baked beans.
The Nashville hot chikn and chikn strips were just out of this world amazing. I used to eat meat before I turned vegetarian and the flavor and texture was so on point it was incredible. When they say hot they mean hot and the lip burning spiciness went oh so perfectly with the barbecue dipping sauce. It was less a meal and more a foodgasm. Loved it so much we got 2 more orders to go - all the way back to Brooklyn!
The chickpea tuna melt was solid as well. Couldn't believe the cheese they used was vegan cheese! I'm a vegetarian so I eat cheese regularly and I just assumed it was dairy cheese, didn't even occur to me it wasn't until later, such was the taste.
The staff are super friendly and helpful and genuinely look happy to be there and assist you. I wanted to tip them 20+% but guess what, the Southern V doesn't accept tips. Its an extremely remarkable and praiseworthy business model that they pay their employees fair wages without being at the mercy of random people's moods/impressions. Made the respect the place even more.
I've been visiting vegan places frequently in New York and checked out quite a few in Portland, OR as well. Trust me when I say the Southern V is by far the best vegan restaurant i have been to. The combination of the food, the price point and just the general experience of having a meal here is absolutely phenomenal.
Its not just an amazing vegan restaurant. Its an incredible...
Read moreI have been waiting to come visit this place since I found out about them. Initially the parking is insane! But... when you walk in, good comfortable vibes. Very popular place surprisingly. I get "shunned" for being vegan in Murfreesboro. Lol. I was very disappointed when the not so welcoming lady at the front told me that "There is no way to charge for a substitution for BBQ Jackfruit" on the Nachos. I wanted to sub with the "chik-n". I have never been a pork fan. EVER! So I don't want anything with that consistency. Or anything sweet in my nachos. So I chose the Nashville Hot Chik-n Salad... disappointed. Let me just point out that the Chik-n was AMAZING!!! Not too hot at all! BUT I paid over $10 for 2 pieces of the chik-n and some greens. Threw some carrots and tomatoes and few pieces of cucumber. But it just wasn't like wow to me. I paid $10 for 2 pieces of the chik-n basically. I am giving 5 stars because it was delicious. Not their fault that I made a poor choice. So I got the patty melt and a side of mac n cheeze to go. I will update about that later. I will be returning. Make sure to ask about drinks because that is unclear. But I seen others getting hot tea and coffee. Which I would've enjoyed with my meal if I had known. Wish people would upload more pics of the food and place on Google or the website. I'm a look at other peoples plate kind of person. Lol. I recommend this place. Don't be afraid of the chik-n. It has an amazing consistency. I would eat it plain by itself. I was skeptical at first. But I was very impressed. Thank you Southern V!
Update: The party melt and mac n cheeze...
Read moreI stopped here on a whim recently and left pretty happy. First and foremost, I appreciate the steps they are taking during Covid to keep everyone safe while still provide quality service.
As far as the food goes, I got a breakfast biscuit (incredible), the cheesesteak (very good), and some chicken tenders (solid). For sides I got Mac and cheese, coleslaw and a bag of chips.
The Mac and cheese was ok, it had an interesting flavor but I did like it enough to eat it. Felt the same way about the coleslaw.
I thought the breakfast sandwich was incredible. The biscuit was fluffy and crispy on the outside, the egg flavor was on point and the the cheese was some of the better vegan cheese I’ve had. The vegan ham was also really good. I haven’t had actual ham in 20 years, but the flavor of the vegan ham was what I very vaguely remember actually ham to taste like.
The cheesesteak was also really good. My wife and I are both from Philly so we judge cheesesteaks pretty harshly. I would give it a 3.8 outta 5.
The chicken tenders were good, I liked the spice, but texture was a little strange. They weren’t really crispy enough for the amount of breading on them. The actual “chicken” part was dense and the outside was just thick breading. If they were crispier they would have been outstanding.
All and all, I really did enjoy the food. I would absolutely stop here again. Probably would stick to the biscuits because they...
