We have been waiting for a diner like Grandpa’s to open since moving to Naugatuck 4 years ago. We decided to hold off dining there for about a month as the reviews pointed out some growing pains of a new restaurant and an untrained staff. Not sure if this is normal but I expect it is somewhat. That said as the old saying goes you don’t get a second chance at a first impression. I hope the owners are treating the unhappy patrons properly. We were initially disappointed that the place was closing before we got home from work. That too was growing pains. They are now open for dinner. We went on the second night and I went in an open minded, open eared Google guide. Upon walking in we were impressed how nice the interior was. Huge improvement over the previous tenants. We weren’t sure if we were supposed to wait to be seated or not so we sat ourselves down. A waitress promptly brought menus and took our drink orders. So far so good. As I browsed the menu I was pleased to see some veggie only dishes. We ordered a Pastrami Rueben for my girl and Chipotle Chicken sandwich for me. As we waited took note of the time, watched other patrons and listened to the one nearest me. The table behind us was very unhappy with a hard pork chop and something else being served cold. The couple adjacent to us was having a pleasant experience so we were expecting the worst because that’s our luck. 20 minutes later our food arrived. My Chipotle Chicken looked fantastic, cooked properly and the greens were fresh. The included portion of french fries was warm and huge. My girls sandwich also looked great, her fries weren’t cold but they weren’t as hot as mine. She likes her food hot. I suspect her dish was completed before mine and sat for a few minutes. Time to dig in, I was pleasantly surprised, my Chipotle Chicken sandwich was wonderful, a nice bite to it, just right amount of avocado. I’m going to have a “thing” for this sandwich for a while, that’s how much I liked it. French fries are different and also very tasty. I was actually unable to finish them. I can’t remember the last time I had more food then I can eat. My girls Pastrami Reuben was also perfect, very lean and dressing on the side. She liked it enough and also the fries that she gave them a pass on the cool fries. We were pretty impressed. Service was good and prices fair. We look forward to making Grandpa’s a regular stop. We will next try them for breakfast and see how they handle eggs and a BLT. Btw the desserts look amazing, might require a special trip just for dessert and coffee. If Grandpa’s can iron out the kinks, get the staff trained and synchronized Grandpa’s could have a great thing here and so will Naugatuck. I wish...
Read moreI always do my pickup at this place and never had issue . I've always been patient with them waiting till this day. I've waited 15 min and this other guy came and his customer's order was ready . So I said how about my order ? So the owner Spanish guy was giving me an attitude and said " listen i don't work for you and u don't work for me . I love my customers. "
I can't believe he said that to me I dnt work for u and u dnt work for me. No need to say that to me. Just say ot nicely ma'am its not ready yet. I wasnt giving an attitude im just asking. I've waited much worse than 15min. He was telling me what to do next time of its not ready then cancel it.
When I started to cry then Spanish guy started talking to me nicely. Is that what I have to do to get him to talk to me nicely?
There's no need to say I dnt work for u and u dnt work for me . U shouldn't just love ur customers but treat everyone nicely and equally. The way he talked to me was not professional and should talked to me nicely . I dnt give an attitude .it takes alot to get me mad and give an attitude. As owner he should have said
"Ma'am I'm sorry for inconvenience let me check on the food. "
Something like that. I work 3 jobs in Healthcare, cashier and uber/door dash i work 80 hrs a week despite how tired I am I dnt give an attitude . I knw how to deal with patients and customers they all say im nicest person. Hardly see me mad. I take care of elderly dad so 4 jobs I have. All I can do is move on keep on smiling despite trials and challenges .
This place should be called Abuelo's Diner Not Grandpa's Diner Coz all employees are Hispanics. Not 1 white or black...
Read moreReview: Grandpa’s Southern Fried Chicken, Downtown Naugatuck Date of Visit: June 8, 2025 Rating: 1/5 stars I had a deeply disappointing experience at Grandpa’s Southern Fried Chicken in downtown Naugatuck on Sunday, June 8, 2025. I ordered Southern Fried Chicken for pickup, but when I arrived, I found it covered in a creamy sauce—something the employee never mentioned when I placed my order. As someone with a dairy allergy, this was a serious issue, as the sauce could have caused a health problem. I contacted the store immediately and was told to return for a fix. When I got there, I explained that I wasn’t informed about the sauce and requested a sauce-free replacement due to my allergy. Shockingly, the staff refused to offer a complimentary substitution and told me I’d have to buy a new item. I asked to speak to a manager, but was told none was available. The employee then called someone named Carlos, who they said was the owner, and he also refused to help. I left the food behind, feeling completely dismissed and upset. I’ve never been to a restaurant that wouldn’t accommodate a simple substitution, especially for an allergy-related issue. I couldn’t help but wonder if my skin color played a role in how I was treated, which made the experience even more hurtful. This level of poor customer service and lack of empathy is unacceptable. I urge Grandpa’s to train staff on clear communication and allergy accommodations. I’d also like to know if others have had similar experiences—has this happened to anyone else? I won’t be returning and hope the management addresses...
