We got off work went to go eat and order the pho, egg rolls and platter. The pho tasted bland with oil and vinegar on top. I try to give it a try and lots of chances. I added my very own emergency oil pepper I brought with me. I then added whole bunch of salt and it was still bland. Never in my life I had to add salt or this much salt into my pho before. I wanted to take it off my bill because I wasn’t going to eat it. The owner got offended and started fighting with me and my husband. She said she never had it happened before and she make 200 pho a day and no one complaint or send it back. I told her I have whole bunch of pho in my life and I never send it back before in my life. She asked if I order the beef stew. She started criticizing me by asking my questions irrelevant to her food. She asked if I ate anything earlier and if I was sick. She blamed me and said my taste changed and if I ate anything earlier today. I told her I am feeling good and I did not eat anything today and I’m super hungry so I came to eat here. Then she kept repeating herself and got my husband involved because she won’t stop and want to argue and blame me for her pho. My husband had to tell her his experiences with the pho too and then she started going off on him too. I started recording her and she finally stopped after a minute and left. This owner is so unprofessional and she wanted to come out and fight because she got offended someone sent her food back. No owner and manager she act this way. She was so rude and disrespectful. It was the worse service in my life. No apologies and want to attack her customers and argue with her customer. I wasn’t happy with my order and all I want to was to send it back that’s it but the owner want to attacked us, pick up a fights and argue. Never will I come back to this place again or recommend to anyone. I posted review on Gion Facebook pages and the owner still want to argue and blaming me. Check out the pictures how unprofessional she is acting...
Read moreI have gone here since it first opened and it used to be a place that I enjoyed going to for lunch, now I try to avoid it. First incident, I ordered the Saigon wings and they were under cooked. I wasn't offered a refund or new wings. I gave them the benefit of the doubt because they don't have a lot of staff and it always seems short during lunch.
Unfortunately, when I went another time and I ordered the wings, to my disappointment, they were under cooked. Not only that, but the man that brought me my food, his hands were stained with motor oil and was dressed in a mechanic's jumpsuit.
I went there the other day, ordered a different appetizer (pot stickers). I requested them fried, but didn't expect them be served in a puddle of oil.
The only thing that I feel is a safe order is the pho. In comparison to the pho shop in Brooklyn Park (Vietnam House) which is a lot smaller, same amount of staff, hell of a lot better food and service. Gion should definitely take notes.
This place has the potential to be good. My recommendation is to hire more staff and train them to check in with customers on the...
Read moreI am fortunate enough to live near two of the reigning champions of southeastern Asian cuisine. Nong's Thai and Gion Vietnamese which I'm reviewing here. Having only ordered takeout (Pho - yum) on one previous occasion, my girlfriend and I stopped in for a random Saturday dinner out. A fairly recent renovation has lent itself to a modern, but not sterile, atmosphere. It's nice. 10-15 minutes later when your meal shows up, you won't care about what the interior looks like because you'll be savoring the Curry Phad Thai or gushing over a Bahn Mi sandwich. We were pretty hungry so ordered the pork rind spring rolls right out of the gate...those ruled too.
All of the staff were super courteous and helpful, prices and portions are great, and we left with huge smiles on our faces. It's nice to love your local hangs, but it's awesome when they're actually really really really good.
Menus are different enough at both Nongs and Gion that it definitely warrants a trip (or several) to each. Come, experience the culinary Indochina that is New...
