Best gluten-free pizza crust EVER. So, first, let's just start by saying that the name Recovery Room is spot-on. My hangry family got off of the ferry with our adrenals blown out by a godforsaken trip to a town I won't name (East Marion) wherein a short-cut to a beach resulted in four of us being covered in ticks and ending up on doxycycline. The beach? Small round rocks covered in spiders. It was as if Stephen King designed a seaside escape. But I digress: we arrived at the Recovery Room in a miserable downpour and starving. The servers could not have been nicer. The place on a Monday afternoon seemed to be filled with happy locals eating carbs with gusto (we're from the Boulder AKA Portlandia area of Colorado, where carbs are illegal). Three of us are seriously gluten-free (including an 88-year-old with serious arthritis) so finding gluten-free options was a real win. Going to be honest: there was a little bit of a wait for the GF crusts. WORTH IT. Everything was beyond delicious -- as if they had a troop of Sicilian grandmothers in the kitchen churning it all out. Gluten-free anything usually tastes like sand (something East Marion could use way more of). The Recovery Room should create their own commercial line of crusts. Or maybe they should take their secret to the grave. Either way, the grandmothers in the kitchen deserve a James Beard award. Next, let's talk cannoli. Amazing! The GF trio could not eat the shells (a crime, I know) but we hoovered the filling. PERFECT. Not sullied by extraneous chocolate chips -- just a good old-fashioned traditional cannoli filling. The whole meal was indeed restorative. If you are reading this and feeling like you need a little Italian grandmother TLC after, say, feeling totally violated by small parasites, skid the tires to this unpretentious place. After a little time on the North Fork I'd suggest that you skip the crowds and prices of Greenport: It's worth getting on the ferry, eating here and going back (and probably a tick-free experience, too). End note: The non-GF people in our party (three of them), reported that the regular glutinous items (a traditional dough white pizza with sausage and a chicken wrap) were...
Read moreFirst off I was greeted and sat down immediately. The gentleman was a welcoming host. We were attended right away. The waiters was pleasant. She didn't mind telling us the Pepsi products over again, she gave us time to decide what we asked for. We ordered pizzas because it's what we wanted and it's safe no matter what. The pies were very good. Not a crumb was left...maybe crust. Not on my part. Both pies were very good. But c'mon I'm from New Haven. We have Modern, Pepe's, Sally's...you get the picture. So it's hard to top because I am spoiled. Anyway we are about to order dessert after the pizza and the host walks over and asks if the food was good and was everything ok, is it an A+. My nephew said "yes". I said it's a solid B+ (we didn't get dessert yet). He took that kind of personal and said "awe man I was going to give you guys cannoli's". I smiled and looked at the menu to get a dessert. Out he comes minutes later with the cannoli's. My family's eyes opened so wide. They never had cannolis before and boy did they love them. Then we started to talk about the service and food and what the score should be. We came to an agreement that it wasn't a pizza joint that it was a family restsurant. That made it easy to put this place in our top 3 at number 2 but number 1 in the family restaurant category. The service was great, the food was great, the atmosphere was great, the cannolis were delicious and the price was very reasonable. We will be going there next time. I want to thank Jack Cochran and his staff for the great experience and service who I then read up on and found out was the host. It was a pleasure eating there. He care's about the service, his customers and most importantly his customers...
Read moreWe were hungry and tired after visiting a friend at Lawrence and Memorial hospital. Other visitors mentioned they were going to Recovery Room for dinner, so when our visit was over, rather than hunt for decent food in New London past 8pm on a Monday night we decided to grab a bite here before heading home.
The service was immediate and pleasant. We had our drinks almost instantly. The unsweetened iced tea was brewed to perfection! My daughter ordered a house salad to start. It came promptly and the portion was double the size of what is usually a starter salad. She enjoyed the house made dressing, and boxed half for her lunch the following day. She and my husband split a cheese pizza. It was average cheese pizza. She liked it more than my husband did. I ordered a dinner salad, that was tasty and large enough to easily feed 2 people, maybe even three. I was disappointed that my dressing wasn't "on the side" as requested, but it was late, I was hungry, and didn't seem worth having the salad sent back. I didn't enjoy the dressing as much as my daughter did, but I am fussier than most about my salad dressing.
The service was fast and friendly. The atmosphere was pleasant, and the menu choices were plentiful, with huge portions. Although not a place I would seek out or travel a distance specifically to dine at, I would come again under the same circumstance. If you're looking for a decent meal while at Lawrence and Memorial Hospital, this place is close and is a much better option than hospital...
