Unfortunately, today was our first and last visit here. When we (3 of us: me, my husband, and our teen son) walked in the restaurant for breakfast, it was fairly slow - maybe a handful of tables sat. There were 3 staff near the podium that were joking around, chatting, and looked at us but didn't say anything. After about 3 minutes, someone showed us to our table.

Our waitress came by promptly and took our drink order. Moments later, she returned with our drinks and we ordered our food. My husband ordered grits and an over easy egg, and shared with the waitress that he mixes them together and she shared a story about how she does the same. (This is relevant because it confirms that she correctly took his order including grits.)

Another server brought our food to the table but disappeared so quickly after setting the food down that no one ever asked "does everything look alright?"

My husband and I looked around and didn't see any servers. After a few minutes, another server walked to another table nearby and I had to call over to her to get her attention to tell her that our order had come out incorrectly. She apologized for the mistake and said someone would bring out his grits. Now, we understand that mistakes happen.

But no one brought the grits. No one ever stopped at our table and refilled our empty drinks. The other server finally looked at our table after a while and realized we had no grits, still. At this point, our son and I had finished our meals and had empty drink cups. The rest of my husband's food was now cold while he waited our entire mealtime for the grits, which he wanted to mix everything else into. He said he didn't want the grits or any of his other food anymore because it was cold and we had already ate our meals, clearly upset. This other server said she would let the boss know so they could take it off our bill.

No manager or boss ever came out to apologize. Our server finally (for the first time since taking our food order) came to our table and did apologize for the wrong food being brought out. I understand that the restaurant had gotten fairly busy at this point in the morning, but no one ever even refilled our drinks.

The food we did have was pretty good. My biscuits and gravy were good and seemed homemade - much better than what most restaurants have. The bacon was thick and not floppy/chewy.

But the service was so disappointing. My husband's entire breakfast was ruined as a result. And we all left thirsty, since we never got a refill and were only offered drinks to go after I brought up never getting refills to our waiter when she apologized about the grits. No manager ever came to apologize either.

The food is not good enough to bring us back to this establishment. We are patient and understanding, to an extent. But this was not a good...

1906 Farmhouse 25405 W Newberry Rd, Newberry, FL 32669

SWILL ALERT

Pulling up to the hitchin' post at the 1906 Farmhouse, all seemed well and fine. I don't mind themed restaurants (they can be fun). This place was designed to model the Farmhouse where the ranch hands gathered for meals before and after a long day of riding. I dug it. It gave off a warm, welcoming, one-of-the-family vibe. Kasey was my server for the meal and she was frowning before I asked one question. I placed an order for one Country Fried Steak with sides of Collard Greens and Mac & Cheese, along with some Strawberry Shortcake to round out the meal. I soon saw Cantankerous Kasey begrudgingly returning with my victuals. I don't understand this attitude. Am I supposed to be grateful she deigned to work here? Anyway, if any of you are curious like me, you may have often wondered what it was like to spend a day in jail. To that end, I admit, I got myself hauled off to the County Hoosegow. Wanting to make the most out of my tax dollars, I booked my stay to include lunch. The dry bologna sandwich you receive, along with the juice bag to wash it down, is something you try to forget. As I looked at the slop my trustee, Kasey, placed before me, I began to long for the county jail government issue bologna.

The Country Fried Steak was fresh from the freezer and cooked with the precision of Stevie Wonder passing his behind-the-wheel driving test. I've been hit with hockey pucks softer than this garbage. The gravy was made in the Sysco factory and this had to be their bottom-grade slush. It was as tasty as flour and water. Wait.

The sides were a step down from the entree, if that is possible. Just look at the pictures and tell me, does anything look appetizing? While I am not one to ever judge a book by its cover, as looks can be deceiving. In this case, they are not, and the adage 'a picture speaks a thousand words' is spot on. The Collard Greens were obviously from an industrial can. Hey, don't get me wrong, all restaurants use a food service, but you don't have to be cheap about it and try to finagle the dining population by using the lowest quality they have to offer.

The Mac & Cheese looked more like something a dog regurgitated than actual food. It was dry and pasty on the palate—just the way it is not supposed to be. The Strawberry Shortcake is also food service, not unlike the stuff you got in high school, only worse. Kudos, 1906 Farmhouse, you officially serve Swill sans the fly. At least on this visit.

The Big Boy says, “I wouldn't serve this SWILL to...

Have gone here twice, I've only eaten here once. Service is a joke. 1st time: walked in the door to be seated and was instantly asked if I was waiting on my check. Explained I just arrived and was waiting to be seated. Was seated, 12 minutes later server (won't name her) took our drinks and food order. 20 minutes later a 2nd server asked if we were ready to order. Explained we already had and have yet to even receive our drinks. She apologized and quickly returned with our drinks About 5 minutes later the 1st server came back to the table to tell us they were out of one of the times. (It had been almost a half hour since we ordered and she was just now telling us). Ok, changed order. 11 minutes later was told there would be a delay as they had to make one of turn side dishes fresh?!?! We are now at almost 45 minutes getting told this. Server used they excuse they it was a busy evening. Including us there were 3 tables and 3 servers. If one table per server is overwhelming they need to seriously consider retraining the staff. 8 minutes later dished arrive minus the one side. Just over an hour since walking in the door for (most of) our food to arrive another 5 for the final side. Figured they had an off night and decided to give ir another shot. Called at 11:22am to place a to go order. Was told they were busy and give them 30 minutes. Understandable; I arrived 50 minutes after placing the order to be told no placed a to go order that morning. When I named the lady I spoke to on the phone she then remembered and started to frantically type into the POS. I told her if she had forgotten to place the order just to forget it. She admitted she did forget (no apology) so I left. (8 tables and 3 servers visible). Two visits with consistent service. BAD! Now for the actual food. BBQ pork was bland and dry, mac and cheese is soupy give a Sysco out of a can vibe. The Cuban sandwich was amazing, seems a ham and cheese sandwich is the limit of the kitchens skills. Do yourself a favor and skip this dining...

Overall: Food is ok/get by. Pricing is very fair and below normal restaurant costs. Clean in serving areas. Don't know about kitchen. Women's bathroom looks to be in the middle of a remodel. We sat ourselves cause no one was around after standing at the front door. Only on family seated in restaurant at the time. Waited several minutes for menus and water. Food: Ordered off of specials board. Served very fast. Quantities good. -Turkey & Dressing was nothing special. Stringy tough shredded turkey. Cornbread stuffing was gooey and plain. Gravy was ok. Green beans were way over salted and mushy. Squash casserole was tasty but overcooked. Yeast rolls were gooey in the middle. -Roast beef: tasty and it was also shredded. Field peas were floating in lightly seasoned watery broth. Mashed potatoes were good. Peach cobbler was canned peaches (peaches are in season now)..basic flour/sugar/milk cobbler. Overly sweet, but tasty still. Server was attentive and there if we needed him. He did a good job. I neglected to take pics of food..not missing much there, so... Would we return? It's a toss up. Maybe to try breakfast. Otherwise.. probably not. Good portions, fair price but nothing made us go oh wow! Yum! Not one thing. Oh and just because the breakfast/lunch/dinner menu is all combined, doesn't mean you can get breakfast all day. Even though there is no time on the menu. That stops at 11am. The place had no energy, low vibes, baseball game on TV, just a plain ole plain restaurant. The decor is ok so I give them a B for effort there. I expected more for some reason..like a little hidden gem.
