We've been 3 times, the first two times were great and each deserved a 4-5 star review, pricing was good, service was fast (relative to a steak dinner), and the atmosphere was good. Then the last time we went it all changed. There was 2 parties, 1 group of 8 and a group of 10 that were there prior to us arriving for our reservation of 4. We sat down promptly at 630 and our friends joined us a minute later. We picked out our drinks and waited for the waitress to return. She finally returned at 645 and we ordered our drinks and also wanted to order our food. She wanted to grab the drinks first which was understandable. Another 15 minutes went by before our drinks were brought over. Keep in mind while they were busy they were far from full. There was a total of 8 empty tables with seating for a total of 28 additional people (I had time to count). At 7 we were finally able to order our food. My colleague ordered a KC strip and the waitress informed us she would have to check as she believed they were running low (again completely understandable). After ordering we sat. And sat, and sat. 30 minutes went by with no update, finally the waitress informed us that the food was being prepared and would be out shortly. After another 15 minutes I requested where the food was at. She said it was being put on the plate and would be out in 2 minutes. We waited another 10 and she came back and told us that they were out of macaroni noodles and would need to substitute angel hair pasta (no problem to switch) but why was this not brought up when ordering and why tell us if the food was already done? Finally after a full hour we got up and walked out. I found the waitress and paid the tab for our drinks as the food was brought to the window I overheard that they were out of the KC strip and had substituted the Prime Rib (again a fine substitution but why was this not brought up long before this point). Of course the management made the excuse that they had large parties (keep in mind the party of 8 had their food by the time we sat down initially) and they were short handed. I asked how they were going to be able to run the business if those additional 8 tables were filled? Very disappointed in the service. 30 minutes just to get drinks is a bit excessive and an additional hour for steaks is quite over the top. I understand being busy but leaving your customers waiting with no updates and substitutions without permission is a bit ridiculous. I love shopping local but unfortunately I won't be back for...
Read moreWe dined in last night for the first time and were not pleased. It started out that they were out of several beers, our server had a terrible attitude and treated us like we were inconveniencing her by asking questions for alternatives that were in stock and trying to order food. The table next to us, that came in after us, got their drinks and salads before we got ours. It took 30 minutes for us to get a glass of water, 1 bottled beer and 2 martinis. We ordered several items off their bar bites menu. It took about 45 minutes to get our charcuterie board, which is advertised that it is for 2 people but can barely feed one. We also ordered brussel sprouts which advertised bacon in them. There was no bacon. I guess that was out of stock also and we weren't advised of that. After another 30 minutes we were told by a different server that they were out of buffalo sauce for the wings. By this point, we were fed up and frustrated with the stank attitude of our server, her lack of attention to our table, many menu items not in stock and the long length of time it was taking us to get anything. We asked for a manager but were informed that there was not one onsite. We cancelled our whole order and left. We will not be back. Very disappointing since Newton has so few restaurants. The restaurant was not busy at all so that isn't an excuse for the terrible service and multiple items out of stock. There were maybe 6 tables, including ours, being occupied while...
Read moreI am definitely a foodie, so let's start with COCKTAILS and APPETIZERS, shall we? Both the Seville Sidecar and the Pink Cadillac are quite refreshing; I will be ordering them again. I am a fan of both stuffed mushrooms and escargot, so the escargot-stuffed mushrooms were a hit; the dish offers a good way to sample escargot for those who have never tried it.
Our main course included a number of choice items from the menu. The roasted Brussels Sprouts make a good hot vegetable side for those who are watching the carbs, and my KC strip was flavorful and cooked perfectly. I don't often eat steak without mushrooms, and the sherry braised side was a popular item at my table. My husband ordered the French onion soup, and it is the real deal! Best we've tasted in quite awhile! We ended our meal with the flourless chocolate torte for dessert. Don't expect sickeningly sweet with this choice; it is more the European-style dark chocolate confection, which is preferable for our tastes.
I do not like waitstaff that hover, or that are overly chatty; nor do I like those who are oblivious or inattentive. Our server found just the right balance of friendly attention for my tastes! My one recommendation for improvement would be to choose the same background music for both the bar and the dining room because they are in close proximity with shared acoustics, so I found the dueling soundtracks to be a little bothersome. Otherwise, a great...
