I just moved to Southbury from Queens, NYC and have been driving past this diner and a few other restaurants in this area on my way to work a few times when the GPS reroutes me because 84 is moving slowly. Decided to come here today and give it a shot. It's never easy going to a new restaurant in a new town after moving from another state so I took a deep breath and walked in. I immediately noticed the half full bar and almost full dining area, I was told I can sit anywhere I like by a pleasant young lady from behind the counter and chose the bar area and before I could sit one of the patrons there insisted I sit at the stool next to her and her husband I assume. I said thank you and sat where she said I should. Soon after I looked over the menu one of the young ladies working there approached me with very pleasant energy and a smile and asked me if I was ready to order, I ordered the same thing I ordered at every diner, French toast, 2 eggs over medium and bacon (because they didn't have links, patties are cool but links are my addiction) so bacon it was. Shortly after she left with my order a second young lady approached me and asked me what I would like to eat, I told her I just placed my order, she said wonderful and whisked away to help someone else. I appreciate that more than I can explain, when you're new to a place and you don't look like everyone else you worry sometimes and usually it's for good reason, I have a Waffle House story to tell you someday, it's why I worry but I digress, they both checked on me and I appreciated that. The food came and everything looked great... I put the finishing touches on the masterpiece, butter and syrup on the French toast, salt and pepper on the eggs and that was all she wrote. The over medium eggs were cooked to perfection, the bacon was tender and also crispy, exactly the way I love my bacon, sausage links? What sausage links? And the French Toast was absolutely amazing! I had no complaints about the food, 10 out of 10. I finished my tea and paid my bill after my waitress gave me her tap to pay verbiage, she was fun, I didn't get a receipt cause I would love to shout her out by name here. I'll just say she had a cool piercing, she's a rockstar. Both of the ladies behind the counter were but I really appreciate her service today, she definitely made me feel welcomed and insisted I come back again before I left for the day. Sandy Hook Diner has a really cozy feel. The staff was super friendly and the service was fast. The food was delicious – I had perfectly cooked French toast, eggs, and bacon. I'd definitely recommend giving this place a try, I am gonna take my own advice and be back soon.

Honestly, I've never had a better breakfast. Dont let the outside fool you. This place has awesome food, great service, and good prices. Their corned beef hash is freshly made! I have NEVER tasted corned beef hash like this and my God I will be back for it. All the food we ordered was amazing. I make my own sausage gravy and biscuits so I'm very picky about others' but this was by far the only one I've had that is up to my standards. 10/10 would recommend and I will be back.

Cute, small diner with an awesome breakfast selection. It has a small, unassuming patio in the back, which was perfect for us as it was a warm sunny day, and we had our dog with us. The food was delicious and hefty portions. The patio could benefit from a trashcan or two, and maybe a option to grab the food or enter the diner from the back instead of having to go around to the front each time. Has good parking space on the immediate side of the building.

Amazing food. The people are so nice and the coffee is great. All reasons to hit this little hidden gem!

Update August 23, 2020

(About a year after my original post)

Everything about the Sandy Hook Diner is just so wonderful. We found it on a recommendation from a friend, and have been going ever since. I'm thrilled to announce that they've opened back up and have taken every precaution in regard to covid-19. We were so happy to go there today and eat on the patio out back. We missed the people, the phenomenal food and the excellent coffee! They have clearly made every change just to continue to be a part of this community, so please be patient during your visit. They're working twice as hard to make our experience worth it, and it is. Tip well! They deserve our business and appreciation.

Thanks for all that you do, Sandy Hook Diner staff! See you...

We stopped for a late breakfast. When we walked in only 2 tables were occupied. We were told take the cleanest table. We ordered our food and then waited and waited ..a group of 6 people at the counter seated and ate their order, and paid before we even had our food. The waitress finally came over to say the food was delayed due to staff(cook?) had to put down ice melt because the parking lot was icy. I thought it was public parking in back of the dinner...sounded kinda a lie... Since the temperature was 40 degrees and early morning ice ( frozen rain) was melted. When I mentioned her about the other group at the counter and the waitress were socializing and chatting away when the tables needed to be clean/ wipe. She finally apologized. I had thought we found a new breakfast spot but clearly we still have to search for...
