Although this establishment is consistently praised in reviews as "dog friendly", my dog was attacked here by the owner's two dogs. They charged on sight. This was not a mutual dogfight or provoked in any way. We were supposed to be spending a few days hiking and enjoying our gorgeous cabin rental. Instead we made the mistake of stopping for dinner here and spending the night in the emergency vet an hour away.
When we arrived, it was dead and my dog was the only pooch in the place. The people were friendly and no one made mention of other unleashed dogs being in the building, or that my dog being there might be a problem on that evening. We would have left immediately and taken our order to-go if we had known there would be the potential for problems.
We had dinner, chatted a bit, and were getting ready to leave when two large dogs (Cane Corsos) came charging from a side door directly for my dog. The owner realized what had happened and was able to get his unleashed dogs under control. Apparently his teenage son had let them loose without thinking.
Once separated, we realized there was a large open gash on my dog's shoulder and a smaller one on his leg. A helpful man at the bar, who I believe was a paramedic, wrapped my dog in bandages and suggested we hurry to the vet as soon as possible.
With no emergency vet nearby, the owner did the right thing and took us to an emergency vet in Mokena. He covered the bill for sedation, stitches, meds, etc ... I do appreciate the way he handled the situation afterwards. He also expressed that he wouldn't be allowing the dogs around other dogs without a muzzle after this incident.
However, I still believe people need to be aware of this before choosing to potentially put their pets in harm's way.
I really don't believe the owner expected this to happen, but his dogs are not dog friendly and his kids make careless mistakes. A teenager should not be left responsible for two large dogs that would be difficult for a trained adult to control. If my dog had been smaller, he would be dead, not just injured.
My dog is now in pain consistently. We cancelled the remainder of our vacation rental (without refund). We didn't even use it, other than a few hours (to sleep) when we finally made it back from the vet. We had several days booked and planned. I am also out my vacation days from work, which I am now spending caring for an injured dog at home. Not to mention time and money spent packing, preparing, driving, etc... All the work that goes into planning a trip. To top it off, I lost my favorite pair of sunglasses in the scuffle. They're not expensive but had sentimental value to me. They were left at the bar but disappeared by the time we returned.
The owner said he would text me about the sunglasses and follow up vet appointment my dog will need, but never followed through.
I feel so horrible for my dog and am worried that this will change his sweet demeanor towards other animals. He's never hurt another dog nor has he ever been attacked and this can cause long term trauma and behavior changes in animals.
I know a lot of my friends hike and go out to dog friendly places in this area. Please steer clear of this place if you have your dog with you.
Response to Owner:
In regards to the dog being inside, two people who were working on the deck directed me inside when no one was available outside. No signs were posted. Bartender (male) was definitely aware of my dog. In fact everyone in the bar said "hi" to him and commented on how cute and calm he was. Bartender (female) was also aware of my dog. I understand that they are not owners, but they easily could have asked me to go outside or if he was a service dog. Either way, people who worked at your establishment were 100% aware and okay with it. I would never keep my dog somewhere he wasn't allowed to be or welcomed.
Now, if your workers aren't trained on proper procedure, that's a separate issue. Either way, even if he were a service dog, he would have been attacked. So that truly is irrelevant at the...
Read moreSo, if you are into good, loud music this place is your spot on the weekends. Their sandwiches are good, the bacon is phenomenal. Drinks are good and reasonable. There is a cute store linked to it , that you can find some treasures in. The only reason it doesn't get 5 stars is because when we were there a man got sick and threw up, getting it on my husband. I was in the cute store waiting for our food, then I came back to the table. The waitress came by with the food, I told her we needed it to go, because of the puke. (It was a Sunday afternoon just fyi.) She left the food on the table and got to-go boxes for me to pack up all the food😅 and then stood there and waited until I paid her. I've been a server for a long time and I would've been apologetic (even though it clearly wasn't her fault) I would've taken the food in the back and boxed it up for my customers and then I would've comped them all a drink. It wasn't the afternoon we were hoping for...
Read moreCame for Burgoo. Have parked in their lot for years, but will probably find a new place next year. They need better signage. "$5 Sat (like it used to be), then $10 on Sunday". I didn't even realize that Burgoo was for two days, I thought it was just one . Other lots closer to downtown were $10 too, seems steep, definitely a deterent. I was only there a few hours.. I used to love to shop for unique items at the Outpost. The vibe is now definitely raucous bar, which I am sure some people enjoy.. Everything changes.. I wish they would add more indoor bathrooms! There are not enough for that big of space, crowd. When I tried to leave the lot, one guy yelled at me rudely.. When I drove to the exit he directed me to, it was blocked off. FUBAR. They offered free...
