Went for lunch on 6/17. We have been there numerous times and had a great time so we figured this would be no different. I knew it was going to start off bad with the manager Gary and not Paul in. He was absolutely rude and abrasive. Even our poor lunch server Soundra was apologizing for his behavior. First, he said we did not have a reservation when we did. Other customers today expressed the same issue. Gary said we didn't type in the confirmation text code that we got. However we did and so did other patrons so I think its a reservation system problem. Then we asked to be under an umbrella since it's so hot in the sun. He said we could not sit at a certain table because a Thursday lunch regular sits at that table with the umbrella. He also said no umbrellas can be moved at all.. Then that table we couldn't have originally due the regular customer was taken by a random customer. Another umbrella table then opened up so I asked the waitress if we could.move. She said yes but Gary said because the regular Thursday lunch customer showed up and her table was taken so she got my table that I asked to move to. Gary again reminded us that umbrellas can't be moved. another patron offered to move the umbrella since they were fully covered and saw how we went to move but had to move back with our food. Gary again reminded us and the nice customer who wanted to share the umbrella that no umbrellas can be moved when in fact they are movable. They just don't want to since they already broke one. The steak tips were terrible and dry. Then checking out the toast system our points didn't work and coviently Gary did not know how to do the toast system. The waitress was showing points but couldn't apply it. Absolutely the worts service we have had in numerous trips. Service was VERY slow. It took about 20 mins for one drink on a Thursday lunch that was not busy at all. We have been there many times and referred people and had an amazing time. We are Weymouth pride people but this will most likely be the last time we ever go or refer people. This was absolutely awful and Gary is so rude. It was not worth $190 lunch. If umbrellas need to requested with reservations then they need to change their system. a Also I have seen other complaints on umbrellas, they should probably invest in more as sitting in pure sun for lunch is not fun while the table next to you is in all shade...
Read moreFirst time: Impressions; Nicely set up and decorated. But as one other reviewer said don’t bother coming if noise, chatter. etc bother you. This is not a quiet venue for a romantic dinner. While i liked the layout and decorating it isn’t conducive to softening sounds. No carpets, drapes, etc. to help. We had a 5:45 reservation and it was about half full inside, by the time we finished (weren’t rushed at all), it was full and noise level went up quite a bit. The chatter level along with overhead background music just didn’t work for me.
When you make your reservation you can pick; outside, high top ( bar area) or table in dining area. I thought it might be a little chilly for outside (turned it wasn’t and no noise, live and learn). So i picked inside. We got a small table for 2 by the fireplace. There was no flame but there was heat blowing out. Strange on a 63 degree night. I asked if we could move and we were accommodated.
On to the menu. It was also weird that they were still serving their “Summer Drink & Dining menus. Our waitresses informed us they would be changing to the “Fall” schedule in a week or so.
The Mrs ordered her 1 usual Cosmo. She said it was just ok. She also ordered the Boilagsnae. She said it was excellent. I order a pork chop. While it was very tender it was extremely salty. I often order pork. hops and it was not only the saltiest I’ve ever had (i’m 70 years old so i’ve had a few), it was the salties food i’ve ever eaten in any restaurant in the world. Sometimes i think things are spicy or hot but my family members don’t and laugh at me. But the Mrs tried a bite and agreed 100%. Therefore i was disappointed.
We finished off with lava cake and a cappuccino. Cake was good but not outstanding. The cappuccino was very good.
Overall we did like the venue despite the noise. We will try again, maybe for lunch while it might not be as noisy. There were plenty of other options on the menu so i will try something different next time.
I might have given 3.5 stars if an option but rounded up to 4 because we did like enough to come back...
Read moreI had heard horror stories, but decided to give Cheever Tavern a chance and form my own opinion. We were finally vaccinated and were excited to ace our first dinner out in some time...as we also had lifelong friends finally being able to visit and were excited to show them how cute and welcoming Norwell is. We made a reservation at Cheever’s for 4 PM on Saturday. We all got ready and walked over. This past Saturday was unseasonably warm, but that didn’t stop us. We walked in and I went to the host stand. The hostess asked me if I had a reservation, I told her I did and gave my name. She handed me 3 menus and then took a phone call. A couple of minutes later she said she needed to see if our table had been wiped. She came back finally and asked us to follow her. She took us to our table on the deck. As we were walking up an man was putting the umbrella down. We asked her (because it was so hot and directly in the sun) if they could please put the umbrella back up. We were told no, because later on the night they needed to turn the heaters on, and they couldn’t put the umbrella down later. We asked again, and this time the “manager” said “nope”. We asked one last time and the “manager” said he would check with the “other manager”. We were left standing there and decided we had enough, we went inside and there was a group of “managers” discussing if they would be able to accommodate putting up an umbrella so their paying customers didn’t cook in the sun...we went up to tell them we would be leaving and to cancel our reservation. We explained that we were locals and had been excited to come to Cheever’s but the the way we were treated from the second we walked in was not acceptable. The “second manager” came walking after us saying he would put the umbrella up...but at this point...it was too late. I have heard a lot of stories about how bad the service is at Cheever’s but thought they had been exaggerated....they had indeed NOT been. We will not be returning for our second first time...fool me once shame on you, fool me twice...
