On vacation in Hawaii with the family we had heard endlessly about a restaurant for Thai food. Unfortunately... Or fortunately since we found this truck.... it was closed when we got there. Disappointed, we set out in search of a good place to eat. Thankfully, we stumbled across Aji Limo. The atmosphere is great... Nice breeze off the ocean, lots of outdoor seating, and the smell of excellent, fresh seafood. The owner walked around and talked to everyone, and the entire staff was friendly. My wife and I ordered the spicy tuna poke bowl and the shrimp yakisoba. My son ordered the garlic shrimp. Everything was extremely fresh... I have to say, we have had poke in several places on the island, and this was head and shoulders better than any other. My son, who is very picky and I thought would hate everything, destroyed his shrimp. My daughter, who is admittedly more adventurous than my son, picked off ours. By picked, I mean she ate half of our yakisoba. When we come back to Hawaii, we will be...
Read more$20 gets you a paltry plate of yakisoba that, in my experience, was missing ingredients. The in-person menu doesn’t list the prices of the plates and the latest menu I could dig up online lists the chicken yakisoba at $16, so… pretty shocking, to say the least. Perhaps this is a normal practice in Latin America, but it felt deceitful to me.
The food was decent, but absolutely nothing your average 12 year old couldn’t whip up. The only discernible flavors in the entire dish were cooking oil and soy sauce. Since the portions are miniature, I had to stop somewhere else afterwards to satisfy my appetite. I might be inclined to give a 5 star review if the pricing was in line with reality, but this establishment appears to be a tourist trap. Pretty nice outdoor seating though. Maybe if the owners spent more time working in their own restaurants instead of farming out the labor, the prices wouldn’t be so outrageous, Ave the food might have some flavor. Gotta pay for that ginormous family and house in Pupukea...
Read moreHomestyle Peruvian & Hawaiian cooking at it's finest! My Hawaiian wife said it was life eating at her aunties. Simple dishes, with big flavor. I loved the spicy poke bowl, and my wife repeatedly had the teriyaki chicken plate. The staff was friendly and helpful, and the chickens were fun to watch while we waited for our order. Be warned the chickens have been known to jump on the tables and snag your food!
Subbing one star because we arrived and they said they were out of lettuce, but served us food at full price with simply "more rice". I suppose it's the nuance of eating a small local food truck, but it would've been nice to either provide "more meat", reduce the price (probably trickier), or just say "SOLD OUT". Could we have gone elsewhere? Unfortunately no, my wife was dead-set on the teriyaki plate that night, and not a lot is open past 6PM on North Shore.
I highly recommend it though, definitely worth a try when...
