Famous Kahuku Shrimp — Restaurant in Oʻahu

I have no idea how this place has a higher rating than Romy's and Fumis.

My husband and I had a craving for kahuku shrimp so we made the drive with the intention of going to Romy's. When we got up there the line was more ridiculous than normal so I yelped the other shrimp places around and saw that this place had the highest rating of them all so we decided to try it.

When we pulled into the parking lot there were barely any cars... I thought maybe it was the locals secret and gave them the benefit of the doubt. We ordered the garlic shrimp and a fried shrimp. Our food came out within 10 minutes and it was piping hot... lightning fast compared to Romy's hour or so of waiting. So one star for that. The price was pretty decent too... $12 for a plate compared to Romy's $16 or so. Another star for price.

The bad thing about it was the quality and flavor. I suppose if you don't want to deal with the crowd and don't want to spend too much, this place is OK. Their garlic shrimp does not compare to Romy's delicious garlic shrimp. Theirs taste like store bought garlic shrimp marinade. I still enjoyed it for what it was but it definitely was not worth the drive.

They did give a fair amount of shrimp compared to Romy's 5 or 6 shrimp but it seemed like the shrimp was smaller and store bought....still better than frozen I guess.

So again, this place was OK if you are in the area already, short on cash and short on time..... Otherwise, don't waste your gas...

I've been coming to this shrimp truck with my family for years. In my opinion, their garlic shrimp is the best on the island. It's always worth a stopover when we're in the area. Customer service is always excellent, and the food is even better. I personally love the garlic shrimp and squid combo. Ridiculously good. I'll keep coming here no matter how many other shrimp trucks pop up (none of them can compare in my opinion). Unfortunately, I live on the west side, so I only make it out here about three or four times a year tops, and I find myself craving their garlic shrimp at least once a month. I'd eat here every week if I could. Overall, best garlic shrimp and squid from the friendliest people.

Used to be our shrimp spot since ever (17 years since we discovered this place) but this time around it will probably be our last time here . Coming from the west side of Oahu and to drive this far and even wait up to 30-45min for the food which never phase us that tells you that we actually loved their garlic shrimp but as the years passed, the garlic shrimp and steak even, doesn’t taste the same.😔 If you have been a long time customer you’d know what I mean .new owners /cooks I guess . The recipe is more on the sweeter side and the shrimp isn’t prepped and cooked the same , we went from the “best shrimp” to “their shrimp is ok”. Super disappointed. I’m sure we’re not the only one that feels this way. If your new to them and you love there shrimp now you probably would have loved there original recipe more than...
