Reimer's Candies, & Ice Cream — Restaurant in Oakhurst

Used to love this place. My visit today however was by far the worst experience I’ve had with an establishment in my local town. It began as soon as I pulled in the parking lot. I was pulling my fishing boat and went to the back, turned around and pulled up next to the building in a position that was as out of the way as I could be. As my wife, young daughter and I were exiting the truck a young ladies came running out of the store and in an extremely condescending voice greeted us with a “you can’t park there.” She explained that I was blocking traffic, just as another truck easily backed out and exited the parking lot as we were talking. She told me that I could park in back, I explained that there was not enough room and I would be blocking people there, then she proceeded to tell me several more times that I can’t park here. I asked if I could park on the exit along the highway and she said whatever you can’t park here. Ok, got it. Went inside to get my girls ice cream and tried give her some advice that a kind greeting would have gone a long way in that situation instead of just a crass command. In the customer service industry it’s never what you say, but it is always how you say it. I understand this business went through an ownership change last year, it may consider going through another one...

No, no, no!! This place doesn’t deserve only five stars out of a five star rating. I know usually say this about businesses or companies but this little candy shop is awesome! They have ice cream that is the best ice cream I’ve ever tasted in my life. I’m not kidding, this place is something else. They’ve got a little map also in the side hallway that’s got little pins on the map where people put where they came from on that map as they are (more than likely) visiting and going to Yosemite. You park in the parking lot in as you walk up you can’t help but get more and more excited each step you take. Every step you take you smell a little bit more of the cookies and the ice cream and whatever other deliciousness they have concocting in there. If you’ve never been here, you need to go! Especially if you’re from out of town visiting Yosemite, then you most definitely should come in here to take a taste of some of the most delicious sweets you will ever have. After a long day of hiking in Yosemite, I was seriously craving some ice cream as a reward — and we stumbled upon Reimer’s Candies & Gifts on our drive back to the hotel. What a gem! It looked like they were open an hour past closing, and I was so grateful for the unexpected treat.

Ms. D was absolutely lovely and made the experience even sweeter. I enjoyed chatting with her while trying to narrow down my choices — not an easy task with so many delicious options! I ended up with two scoops of gelato: birthday cake on top and salted caramel dark chocolate underneath (a wise suggestion from Ms. D, since the birthday cake was sweeter). She described the birthday cake flavor as tasting like the vanilla frosting on store-bought cookies — and she was spot on. It was exactly what I was looking for.

The salted caramel dark chocolate was unlike any version of that flavor I’ve ever had — rich, balanced, and uniquely delicious.

This stop was a total highlight of the day, and I’ll definitely be back next time I’m in Yosemite....
