Southern Café — Restaurant in Oakland

I have been patronizing Oakland's Southern Cafe frequently in the past 6 months or so. I came in with my sister on Wednesday evening for dinner. We were politely greeted by the staff. We were served hot muffins quickly after we came in. We ordered our food and waited 50 minutes to be served. I ordered fried chicken and sides. After 50 minutes, I was brought out one piece of chicken of 3 pieces. The chicken breast was very greasy and seemed to be refried. I had to ask for hot muffins to eat with my meal. I waited another 35 minutes for the other two pieces of chicken. Maybe the take out orders had priority. At the point we were unhappy and took our food to go. My sister ordered liver and onions as she ordered our last visit and she said it was delicious. She said her onions mostly were very large pieces of onion instead of sliced. There was a young wait staff which should not matter because other young ladies serving before were managing the orders well. As a business owner, I was sad to see the wait staff leave tables uncleaned quite a while after customers had gone and they passed the dirty tables many times without even cleaning the tables. Maybe 30 or more minutes. I told my sister that I knew the owner and saw him at a Sunday event for Sandre Swanson about a month ago and raved about the food. I also told her I should let Phillip know how I felt about the service that day. Funny I get this request for a comment. I wanted to pull a couple of wait staff and suggest a few things but I thought someone is in charge back there so calm down and go. I was very disappointed so I will take a break for a while. Let's see where do I start the fried chicken smothered chicken seafood platter oxtails short ribs meatloaf greens yams macaroni and cheese cornbread cabbage or also good I can't even stress how good this stuff is you have to try it yourself to believe me I haven't tried the other few things that are left or the menu I'm so happy with these I went to this place all last week they could work a little bit more on customer service but I got to say they are not rude I think it's just that some of them are young so they just got to get the hang of it they just be doing a job and going on about a business I'm going back again and again I hope and yes I would recommend it for someone else oh yeah the prices are quite fair for the amount of food you get I usually eat twice off my plate I paid $25 for two chicken breasts a wing gravy rice cabbage yams cornbread I paid $25 for the same plate but I had breast leg thigh and added macaroni and cheese basically for all white meat they charge a dollar fifty more the seafood platter is a little bit more I believe it was like 27 $28 and it was fish oysters shrimps but they don't let you change I don't eat oysters so I just gave them away but they tasted pretty good I just can't eat them my short ribs and my oxtails were also $25 they also have it where you can pay something like almost half price to just get a meat okay enough with this post now head on over to Southern Cafe and try...

Great soul food experience. I ordered the oxtail which comes with rice&beans, mac&cheese and green beans. Mac and cheese was good. Green beans were ok, amazing once I put it in my gravy. My oxtail was amazingly delicious with a perfect gravy and rice. My husband had the short rib with mac and cheese and cabbage that has ham in it. Who doesn't like meat with their veggies? The lemonade was addictive. My waitress service was mediocre at best. My cornbread came with my meal. She never checked on us after our food was delivered to our table even though she passed our table several times. She brought the lemonade we ordered earlier when we were almost done with our meal and even then she dropped it off and walked away. Next we saw her, she asked if we wanted a box and then delivered the check. So why did I still rate 5 stars? Her colleague, Kim, I noticed was providing outstanding service! While I was waiting on my lemonade and cornbread, I watched her deliver her patrons orders promptly and with an appealing attitude. She even took off the bread plates without my soliciting it.
