Read moreI visited on a Thursday evening to sample more of the food I enjoyed with previous takeaway experiences. Bar service was largely attentive, as Billy proved to be a cheerful and conversational host over the couple of hours I was there. The menu selections looked uniformly inviting, and I settled on the tikka wings to go along with my chips and salsa and added guacamole to start. I appreciated Billy recommending the off menu jalapeño salsa given my taste for spicy food. A sampling of a beef, pork, and fish taco along with some black beans appealed to me next, finishing with some fried plantains and coconut flan. Interspersed with the food were two margaritas — blood orange and passion fruit. Timing for all of these offerings came at appropriate times with a single hiccup with one taco initially arriving as a combination instead of a la carte.
The drinks seemed balanced and quite enjoyable between the rum and fruit, although the blood orange variety could have had a little more blood orange. Chips were crispy and not oily, and the guacamole was as smooth as the regular salsa was sharp and fresh and the jalapeño kind was hot. Wings were seasoned well, especially with the slightly tangy sauce, and cooked well with a slight crispiness to the skin. The accompanying salad with pickled onions could be eaten plain and tasted even better with the house raita which could also easily be enjoyed on its own. The tacos retained an amount of thermal heat with a good amount of filling and garnish to fill each taco. The carne asada could be cooked to medium rare for my taste instead of what looked like medium well. The fish offering was flaky and spicy with the cream drizzle a welcome balance in flavor. The carnitas might have been my favorite of the three with delightfully stringy pork and just enough pineapple accents to go along. All in all three enjoyable tacos to be sure. The black beans can be eaten nearly as a soup, as the bean texture is not too soft and not over cooked. The well-portioned plantains had the right amount of crispiness on the outside and softness on the inside. The coconut flan was different than other renditions I have eaten in a positive way. The caramel had a well-appreciated loose consistency which made drizzling over the flan and eating separately equally easy and satisfying. The flan itself had the smooth texture without feeling gluey, and the roasted coconut shavings on the top garnished the custard so well.
My bill for all of this eating totaled around $80 excluding tax and tip. I definitely felt the quality of what I ate and thus appreciated the value I experienced for the kind of food being cooked here. I could most assuredly join others here or get takeaway for me alone or revisit the bar and have another experience with...
Read moreI know this is not really a fair review as I did not go to this place to eat. (Birthday) I was just there and I will only speak to what I witnessed.
The place is really nice... like a an influencers background. Good music and very friendly staff.
The parking is plentiful.
But the tables are a little too close to each other... and it's made felt smaller by pillows? Seriously so many pillows all over lol.
It is not their fault I went in fall weather when it is neither hot/cold but it was either too cold or too hot in the place and made the experience harder around spicy air
The amount of spice and peppers used in the food messes with the sinuses a bit. But not in a bad way. But definitely worked against them At times.
Now I will remind you I wasn't in the mood for food drenched in butter or oil... but unfortunately it was pay $20 for something I didn't want or chicken tenders. Which were good but 2 small lady fingers would have been more accurate. But I did have to get it from kids menu so I guess my fault. Not a restaurants responsibility to make an adult like kids item. Or maybe they should make an extra effort to comfort all patrons??? Idk... your call
My family ordered pretty much everything on menu and I was able to try some things and the only thing that was a huge hit at the table were the nachos and salsa. Everything else was "ok"
The burritos are very big and well presented but in my opinion... which again is based on very limited tasting... is that all the food was just mediocre Indian food dressed up as Mexican.
For example a tikka masala taco was a half scoop of mediocre tikka masala on Mini naan garnished with picked onion. That's neither taco or tikka.
The thing I tried that was prob the best of it all was the steak on fajitas... but at $20 a plate... it seems a waste for a few bites. But steak doesn't need a lot of seasoning and I think less would be better for this place.
Now heat is another subject all together, the reliance of curry, cumin, and star anise i under stand... but just blatant spice doesn't make things better... be careful with Baja shrimp... basically smothered in some spicy pepper.
At the end of the day I think it's a good place to eat once you know what's good and what's just filler option on menu.
Fajitas are good. Burrito is big. Nachos are plentiful and tasty.
Nothing else is worth a mention.
And I would skip dessert. Most restaurants don't try hard on desserts. These guys aren't an exception.
Also, I recommend going during non busy times... service and food suffers when demand is high... go when they...
