In town for the night with my son and his family, he and I like to try unusual, out of the way places. This place having been featured by Guy Fieri on Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives my son suggested we check it out. No doubt this place is a dive but the smoky aroma in the air was intoxicating. We ordered the brisket, ribs, one link, fried okra, fries, and lemonade. We appreciated that the meat wasn't served drowning in barbecue sauce like so many places do. It was delicious, moist and tender but left me desiring a more smoky flavor that the aroma in the air had given me cause to expect. Leo's signature barbecue sauce was okay but the flavor was a bit reminiscent of A1 sauce and somewhat sweet 'n sour (I am a fan of Head Country Barbecue Sauce so all the rest kinda take a back seat to that). The french fries and fried okra were obviously frozen product but prepared well. The signature Cake dessert covered with strawberries and bananas was good but I was too full by the time I got to it to fully appreciate it. We aren't wealthy and appreciated that the price was reasonable for the portions we got. The waitress was very patient with us while we were deciding what to order and her service was exemplary; so much so that we felt it merited a $10 tip. All in all, not the best I'd had but definitely in the top 10%. I would recommend it to others finding themselves in the area as definitely worthwhile to stop in and give it a try. Be warned that your clothes and hair will smell like Hickory smoke when you leave; a smell that I didn't mind going away...
Read moreIts hard to find a good old fashioned BBQ joint in OKC, with many BBQ joints opting for more hip and modern styling. Thank goodness for Leo's though, they have kept it real and deliver a great classic BBQ experience. Its just a little hole in the wall, but the good kind!!
From the outside Leos looks like an abandoned gas station with a lot of cars outside. Inside though its very clean and has a really cool vintage rustic look. You get the impression your eating somewhere that's been around for a minute or two.
Their BBQ is on point. The flavor is great and they know how to do BBQ right. Their Hot Links in particular really impressed me. It was my favorite part of the whole meal. They have several different sauce choices to choose from whether you like mild for the flavor or heat instead.
For desert they have this amazing pineapple strawberry banana cake with frosting that is amazing! Served hot it melts in your mouth. Extremely sweet but not overpowering.
The staff is great too, and the owner was there cooking the meals. He made it a point to take time to go around and greet the customers, and make sure they were happy. Plus he treated us all with a slice of free cake. This was pretty surprising considering it was late in the afternoon and only 5 people or so were eating.
My only criticism would be that they are a bit pricey. On smaller dinners the price is reasonable, but if you wanna go for the whole experience and try everything, your gonna spending $20 at least. In the end it was...
Read moreCan I rate 1/2 xstar? This was the worst barbecue joints I have ever eaten at. I was in 10/22/17 and spent $40 on a meal that was not good at all...exception, the cucumber salad from the self-serve bar was great. The ribs were fatty, fatty, tough and cold. No sliding off the bone here. Secondly, the baked beans tasted right out of a can...bland. The potato salad had no seasonings and looked like just cut-up potato with a little mustard for color. Lastly, the best for last..."the almost worlds most famous strawberry-banana cake" the worst cake I ever tasted...it seemed to be a cheap mix from a box ending up as a slice of cake with a sliver of banana and a few slices of strawberries drizzled with confectionary sugar icing. Entire meal was a disaster... Having these comments to submitt after an initial visit, I do so honestly, since I went to this establishment highly rated on the "Dinners, Dives and Drives" tv show with Above Average Expectations for some good barbecue. Upon arrival and seeing the price of the meals...and the "almost worlds most famous strawberry-banana cake", I really thought I was going to invest into a tasty meal. My fault, I had high expectations and was very disappointed but what do you really do? I suggest you do as I did not do and not go for an initial visit but if you are wanting to be your own judge...go right ahead with your order. I paid the outrageous price for less than average food but I will...
