MIRSINA'S BRUNCH Old Saybrook is a town of many elderly males...like myself. We're mostly Yankees and we have a few easily spotted traits. We're thrifty(cheap), loyal, independent, usually mate for life, and the older we get, the less inclined we are to make new friends. So when our kids are gone, our spouses die, or just leave; rather than getting "out there", we turn inward and just learn to cope with being lonely. We're a proud, maybe stubborn bunch, but, still just quietly lonely. And in, aptly named, OLD Saybrook, there's a fairly significant number of old men, made grumpy by life, and lonely by circumstance. And among the many things we miss, a smile, a kind greeting, or even just remembering our name, goes a very long way toward dropping the "grumpy", from grumpy old man. But a simple kindness is becoming rare these days. Most places to get a simple meal have been taken over by young excited entrepreneurs. Their dishes have catchy names, their servers memorize a script, and when they greet us, they might as well be talking through a drive-thru speaker. Fortunately, there's an exception. And like most exceptional places, the joy, the genuineness, and the caring, come trickling down straight out from the heart of the owner. Mirsina's is a nondescript little breakfast and lunch location on Main St. The location may be nondescript, but the owner and food are definitely not. The food is classic breakfast and lunch fare with the added bonus of perfectly prepared Greek American Specialties. Mirsina's Benedict variations are highly creative and her Hollandaise would rival a Michelin star chef's. Her sandwiches are generous, her bread homemade, and every dish has the signature of a staff that always does, just a little bit more. Mirsina, the person at the top, is a caring, very human boss and owner. Because of her wonderful staff, you're a stranger only once. For couples, families, ladies who lunch, and local blue collars, Mirsina's is a great little Brunch destination. But for us old guys, who will never go to a senior center, join the Kate, or ever admit to any emotion, it's a little taste and touch, of what home used to be, or...
Read moreSexism is alive and well at Mirsina's and I won't be returning. When I was there with my kids over Labor Day weekend, one of the waitresses kept referring to us as "guys" (we were all women) and this kind of patriarchal language really just has no place in 2025. You wouldn't go up to a table of all men and say "hey ladies, how can I help you?" But women are supposed to be misgendered and invisible? Super regressive. But then it got worse. The staff kept commenting on my daughter's physical appearance, telling her how pretty she is (she's 7) and how beautiful her hair is. Meanwhile, my son was sitting right next to her but he got to enjoy his meal without being objectified. My daughter became really uncomfortable because she's just a person who wants to eat a muffin in peace but had to be swatting away staff who thought it was appropriate to comment on the "beauty" of a child (and again - they of course didn't do this to my son because why would they?). Finally, I called the restaurant to give feedback regarding something else about our experience and the woman who picked up the phone called me honey. I'm in my 40s and a councilwoman, yet I have to be demeaned on the phone and spoken to like a child? What a concerning experience. Definitely won't come back here since it doesn't seem like they respect women or just the human experience of...
Read moreI should have known better after seeing the Dunkin’ Donuts in Old Saybrook with a 4.2 rating and Mirsina’s with a 4.7 rating. How a fast food restaurant serving mass produced junk can rate that high doesn’t reflect positively on the legitimacy of other restaurant reviews. Had high hopes for Mirsina’s based on the ratings but left feeling like it is average at best = 2.5 out of 5 stars. We ordered 3 omelets, two vegetarian and one with meat, which were bland, home fries were among the worst we had and didn’t eat them, and the whole wheat toast tasted store brand. Thankfully there was ground pepper and sirrachia sauce to add flavor. We also ordered the Hungry Man, an egg sandwich on a bagel and two side orders of pancakes… for a party of 5. The stars are for the pancakes, blueberry and Oreo, which made up for the rest of the food, fluffy and tasty. Had we not ordered pancakes the rating would have been 2 stars. Another downside though is no real maple syrup, just the mass produced high fructose syrup variety in the commercial single serving tubs. The bill without tax was just under $70 which is reasonable for the amount of food ordered. Given our experience with the food this is a one and done for us. It is also a warning that google ratings are not...
