Tops Bar-B-Q — Restaurant in Olive Branch

I give it 1 star because 1) zero stars is not an option and 2) there is a black woman and a younger white woman there that I find pleasant. They always make sure I have my food, even when once an older white lady swore everything was in the bag. Maybe I always go at the wrong times, but the last two times I have eaten here, it has been horrible. Usually the cashier (the black lady or younger white lady) is nice and the food is hot and delicious. But I notice these last two times I've ordered, the older white lady with the smoker's voice was the cashier and my order is always screwed up. She obviously doesn't care to work here. I asked for a double cheeseburger on the last occasion, I got a double burger no cheese. Tonight I ordered, I asked for mayo only, and I got mustard only. Last time I got a bbq brisket sandwich and it was full of fat. I like fat but nowhere near as much as I got on that sandwich. The brisket sandwich was also very dry so tonight when I ordered, I asked for extra bbq sauce on my pork sandwich. The pull pork sandwich was DRY and hard, no extra sauce, just the usual dab. Only thing good was the bbq beans and even sometimes they are a hit or miss. I should have driven off when the smoker's voice lady took 10 minutes just to take my order. Literally pulled up, 3 minutes later she said "hold on" then 10 minutes later, with two cars pulled behind me, she finally takes my order. Seriously, out of the 3 Tops bbq places I have eaten at, this is the worse one. But again, those two other cashiers, whom I seem to can never catch when I go, were always nice. Now I'm not coming...

Despite the negative reviews, I went in with an open mind. The young lady at the counter was friendly and attentive. The lady with the purple hair that people talk about in the reviews was in the kitchen so I didn’t get to interact with her.

I ordered the sampler plate [ribs, pork, brisket] with potato salad and beans for the two sides.

The Good: To my surprise, the beans were tasty. The ribs had the most flavor of the three meats. The potato salad was ok.

The Bad: Other than the ribs, the meat was bland without much flavor. The brisket was slightly peppered but had no smoky flavor at all. The pork was worse with no seasoning and no bbq smoky flavor. The potato salad was ok but about a third of it was frozen so I stopped eating it and threw the frozen chunk away (see photo). The brisket was rubbery and chewy. None of the meat was hot when it was served to me. It was room temp or just slightly above that. I asked for sweet bbq sauce and that was on my receipt but I got hot bbq sauce instead. The coleslaw was not good at all. I didn’t order that but they gave it to me so I tasted it.

Bottom Line: I don’t think I’d return here again. There’s a sign up in the front that calls this “Memphis BBQ.” I assume that better bbq is available in the area but this doesn’t live up to the hype at all. This may be the worst bbq I’ve ever had. This seems like a parody of a bbq place. So little concern is shown to the taste and quality of the food that I found myself hoping that at least they prepared and handled the...

This is my second review on this restaurant. 2 months ago I had a complaint about the bad customer service of taking my order or coming to the drive thru window. I tried again this evening to get a bbq plate and I got a small scoop of beans with a small scoop of slaw in a container. I have never received my plate this way and pay good money to receive this. This is unacceptable and the owner of Top’s really need to evaluate their workers they hire as well as the service customers are receiving. The review score speaks for itself. Disappointed again.

I was taking orders that came out of the building and said hold on we’ll be with you shortly so I said ok, I was still sitting at the intercom to place my order. Then when he was going back in he asked what I was ordering, I told him and he said ok pull around to the window, so when I did I noticed a young lady that look like she was the only one in the back to fix food and I didn’t even see the guy that took my order. I waited until the young lady came to the window but she never did. I sat there for a min and watched as she was writing something down then she went to the front and came back, still no I’ll be with you in a min ma’am..nothing. So I left.
